Since I am one of the GoPro guys, I often shot in 1080p60 intending to final render at 30p. The 60p was only just in case I wanted slow mo. You never know what might happen on an MTB ride.
This is a situation where “Smart” resampling needs to be smarter, IMO. When going from 60p(59.94) to 30p(29.97) the resampling does frame blending for the result when it should probably just drop every other frame. I think if the smart resampling were smarter, there would be a lot less complaints about it.

I couldn’t agree more that smart resample needs to be smarter. The question is how to make it high on Sony’s priority list? How many customer are affected? That sort of thing. I was just pointing out that it doesn’t affect everyone so it’s not like an issue that everyone has that’s all. I wasn’t implying that it wasn’t a problem. FCP X has no problem dropping every other frame to go from 60fps to 30fps so I don’t see why the Sony developers can’t figure it out. It just must not be high on their list.

July 22, 2015 at 7:03 pmI do some slo-mo work and also use Twixtor in places, 50fps works better. I have also found that whenever panning at 25fps, or using dolly track, it is not as smooth. I know that effectively scaling down from 50fps to 25fps is losing frames anyway, but it just works better for me.
However, even if smart resample is added to 25fps it still looks bad and ghosty. ..i really don’t like Sony’s offering with this.
I don’t know if I’m technically spot on, but we can only go with what works best.
If you have any advice John, I would appreciate it as I know you are a genius with this stuff.
Thanks

Curious. If you are shooting 50p and an appropriate shutter of say 1/100 and then disabling resampling and rendering down to 25p it should look worse than 25p with an appropriate shutter of 1/50th. The slower shutter of 25p would have motion blur to smooth things out.
In the GoPro world, shutter speeds are 1/1000 and faster outdoors so there is no motion blur in video. For normal video that shutter is not ideal as we don’t get motion blur, but when wanting to use something like Twixtor/Respeedr those fast shutters are ideal.

I agree about shutter speed. If you are using too slow a shutter speed your 25fps will have motion blur.

That’s operator error. You need to to pan slower. This was a common problem back when 24p was all the rage and 60i shooters were constantly complaining that their pans were jerky. That’s because you need to LEARN how to shoot 24p and the same is true for 25p. It’s a limitation of the medium that you must learn to deal with. Practice shooting 25p against a picket fence and see how slow you need to pan to make it smooth. It’s just a matter of paying slower. If you shoot 25p you can see the problem in the viewfinder while shooting. If you shoot 50p you won’t see a problem until you get into post and throw 1/2 of your frames away.
This is made worse by shooting 50p and disabling resample than shooting 50i and blending frames.

I am a GoPro user as well. I shoot in 60p by default as none of my cameras can shoot 30p. You are right in that we may want to slow down the clip. Have you tried the Flux feature in GoPro Studio? It does a great job of slowing down videos, even way slower than half, as it creates frames based off of previous and following frames. If you haven’t, search for gopro flux on YouTube. there are some very good examples of what it can do. -

Yes, I have looked at Flux. Before Flux existed I purchased Prodad Respeedr and I have used that so I have not actually used Flux other than simple tests. I will say that Respeedr is WAY faster than Flux.
