DCP Sony F3 Advice
Posted by Fred Ricci on July 18, 2011 at 3:28 pmHi there
I am doing some tests for a feature film to be shot with a Sony F3 and recorded to a Kipro in 1920p prores HQ.
Should I grade with the normal scale video or unscalled full?
I will render to 16 bit Tiff, with a lut Rec709 to XYZ that I found here in the forum. Did anyone use the XYZ Tiff from Resolve?
Any advice would be much apreciated.

July 18, 2011 at 6:00 pmSounds like a plan!
I use unscaled and render xyz 16bit tiff for dcp encoding and the results are spot on!
I’m not sure why you’d want a rec709 lut on their unless the guys doing the dcp have asked for it.Stick with unscaled xyz for dcp and render RGB10bit with the rec709 lut for tape deliverables..
(or add rec709 lut and powermaster straight out to tape)

Thanks for the answer.
The Lut is from Rec709 to XYZ, created with cinespace by a member of the forum, https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/277/5053 , and worked well for my first DCP from 5D footage, but I’ve graded it in normally scaled.
What would be the benefit for me to grade with unscalled, since the monitor I am using at the moment is a broadcast LCD from JVC? The footage looks very high contrast with unscalled on, and I am afraid that if I lift it, it will look washed in the big screen.NEHALEM OCTO 2,26

July 20, 2011 at 2:16 pmHi Fred, I can’t understand this
RGB2XYZ of resolve can be inaccurate?. RGB to XYZ is a basic task, how it can be bad?
I think you are referring that you grade with rec709 and cinema is DCI-P3, and you want a RGB709 2 XYZP3 and this is a totally different lut.

July 20, 2011 at 4:41 pmHi José,
RGB2XYZ for the render file output prior JPEG2000 encoding …. this LUT gives really accurate results.
Good job on the Red Forum btw.
