I have a 24p 10 bit SD sequence that I want to convert to a PAL Quicktime movie for eventual output to PAL Digibeta and DVD. Quality is priority, but I’d like to do this within FCP Studio to save $. I’m guessing I’ll do this either within FCP or with Compressor but not exactly sure how. When I converted this sequence to 29.97 before, I just dropped the sequence into a 29.97 sequence, rendered, and voila. I’m wondering if this is the same case. My concern is I’ve heard that audio is affected once converted to PAL. Any info would be much appreciated!

    Best,
    Alexander

You speed up the file to 25. This is the whole idea behind 24P.
How you do it is up to you. Fastest is probably to render a qt and use Cinematools to flag it as 25.
Then of course the audio is pitch shifted. You either accept that (that’s the highest quality you can get, but you have to play out analogue or accept a little render hit on converting it to 48.000 again).
If you want to pitch shift it, there are a zillion opinions on what is the best way for that.

    Hi Bouke,
I’ve never worked with p24 stuff just PAl and few times with NTSC.
In this case there is not necessary to deal with any Pull-down?
Just with conforming in CinemaTools would be enough?
    Thanks in advance/

    NOOOO!

You need to have NO pulldown, then, when you speed up, ‘a frame is a frame’.

So if you have pulldown now, remove that first, then speed up.
(this you have absolutely no artefacts in your image)

    Hi Bouke,
    Thanks for your answer.
Some time I have to update my self about the Pull-down. Thanks God we don’t use it in PAL-land.
    Cheers,
    Rafael

I guess this would ensure no change in image quality, but the change in audio pitch is very worrysome to me. I guess my other options are Compressor or Nattress Standards Converter…

well, you said quality was important.
If that’s still true, forget about standards conversion.
Not only will it motion introduce artefacts, the render time will kill you (if you use Compressor. Natress is good for the money, but not a 150K hardware box.
Besides, every single hollywood movie that is brought out in Europe uses 24->25. Sound can be fixed in a zillion ways.

    So pick your poison.
