OH, I just realized it was used stuff you were looking at. For $450, it’s not a steal but you’re not being robbed either. I had basically that same setup for a year. It’ll work ok. Don’t expect the moon and be cautious with the highpoint. It’s a decent starter RAID system.

Thanks John! Well I’m getting rid of the rocketraid. I’m going with areca. Seems everyone who has one is extremely happy with their product and support.

Do you have any knowledge on the Areca ARC-1223x? Found one for a good price.

I’m comparing it to the ARC-1222x and the ARC-1223x seems a bit better.

Can’t find ARC-1223x in your links. Not even sure it exists. You need two external MiniSAS SFF-8088 ports to drive your enclosure. 1222x has them, 1223-8i doesn’t. You can get adapters and brackets to convert internal SFF-8087 to external SFF-8087 – your call if it’s worth it.

    @ Jon.
Aside from the price can you tell me if there is a difference between these two Raid Controllers?

My other question to you. Is the 1882x a better (faster) Raid Controller than the 1223x?

    Thanks for your help

Hey Guys. Now that everything is setup, I need drives…. Which drives do you guys recommend? John recommended Deskstars and Ultrastars. Anything else? Anyone ever use the WD reds? Any good?

    Thanks in advance!

[Chris Alstrin] “Aside from the price can you tell me if there is a difference between these two Raid Controllers?”

One will be supported by ProAvio as their own (including cross-shipping), in addition to Areca’s support. The other one – NewEgg and Areca support only.

[Chris Alstrin] “My other question to you. Is the 1882x a better (faster) Raid Controller than the 1223x?”

1882x is faster – you may or may not see the difference in performance depending on your storage configuration.

WD Reds are good but not supported on more than five drives in a RAID set or chassis; WD RE drives is another option – less expensive than Ultrastars.

    Hey Chris,

Thank you also. Alex was quicker on the draw than I was the other day, glad he handled your inquiry.
