  • Colors not as rich when I export to QT

Posted by Martin Jordan on July 4, 2011 at 3:32 pm

We are doing a series of online video’s in 1920 x 1080 @ 24p. We are capturing video on 3 camera’s. A Panasonic using AVC-Intra 50 and converting to Pro Res 422 (HQ) and 2 5DMKII’s and converting those also to Pro Res 422 (HQ) both in FCP.

FCP Sequence settings are 1440 x 1880, 24p, QT video compressor settings Apple ProRes 422 (HQ).

The problems is the footage looks great in the timeline. Color is good, nice and saturated, shadows & highlights good too. So, the next step I export the final sequence to a self contained QT movie, choose Current Settings, then output the whole video to a .mov file. BUT…when I view the .mov file, it’s a little washed out. My talents skin tones are pale, my darks are a little washed out etc. It’s just not as rich as it is the time line. I tried outputting with different QT compressor settings such as H.264, Uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 and so on with no improvement. I even tried all 4 of the different video processing choices…render in RGB, 8 bit YUV and so on. No difference.

I don’t ever recall having this problem before. Normally my self contained movies are good to go, I then bring them into Squeeze for final prep for the web.

Any suggestions on how I can hold color & saturation when exporting from FCP?

    thx

Aren’t the source clips 1920X1080? If so, why are you resizing them in the sequence?

Also post the version of QuickTime you’re judging this all with…

I’m resizing them some because they ultimately are going on the web only and don’t need to be that big, however the aspect ratio is the same.

    Here’s a url for a sample:

What’s also interesting is that I just took that exported QT .mov that is a little washed out and just brought it into a new timeline in a new FCP doc and it looks fine there. When I view it in QT it has that washed out look. So apparently it’s the way FCP is interpreting the color. This is weird.

FYI-our entire system is calibrated. Again I’ve used this method for quite a long time & I don’t ever remember running into this before. Obviously some settings have change.

What settings do I need to change to bring FCP & QT to look the same?

    Your workflow is very wrong.
If you are going to a web video you must keep Square pixels.
1440×1080 is nor square pixels. Beside destroying the picture, that will shows distorted in a web site..
    Work in 1920×1080, 1280×720,..etc
    always keeping the 16×9 relation.

Rafael is right. Always stay native in the sequence to the frame size/rate, then in the END make your downsized web dimensions. This could be part of the issue, not clear on that, but give it a try on a single clip in a sequence which matches it’s properties exactly.

Yeah I know that. Thanks. Got that part. This problem is before I even go to the web.

Just so I’m clear on this then…you guys got me to thinking now.

When I log & transfer (both AVC & 5DMKII clips) I select the ProRes 422 (HQ) preference and it’s resizing and converting them during the LT process. We I import these clips into FCP, FCP ask’s me to I want to convert these clips to match sequence or keep the clips native. I always say native and it’s 1440 x 1080. So what setting do I need to keep them at 1980 x 1020?

Also where is that other setting again where I check & make sure on the square pixels?

there is not resizing needed at all, just transcoding.
    Both are 1980×1080. that’s HD

    This is not like that.
FC asks you to match the Sequence to the footage.
So if the footage is 1980×1080, say YES.

    Rafael,

Ok, watched Shanes video. I remember this video. I watched it long time ago.

OK, here’s where I’m at…I checked my QT files after I logged & transferred…and they are in 1920 x 1080. When I import them into the timeline in FCP though AND CHECK YES and you said to change the sequence to match the clip size, it still changes it to 1440 x 1080. How do I change that?

I have this issue all the time when working in Motion at 1920×1080. I’ll export my project natively, bring it into Compressor and render to h264, and check it in QT before uploading to the client. It ALWAYS looks washed out in QT but looks fine on the client’s DS network. How do the projects look when played back on the web??
