May 24, 2006 at 10:51 pmNice idea. Those guys are gonna be pissed when Apple comes out with the new Intel tower and changes the case design, though.

May 24, 2006 at 10:59 pmHe’s ahead of the game and believe it not i am standing here with him the APPLE Store in the Wellington Green Mall (West Palm Beach, FL), and he has assured me that he is ready for the design change. Now hopefully APPLE doesn’t COMPLETELY change the inside where there is no way that it can happen. Anyway, i’m excited for the gentleman!

May 25, 2006 at 1:11 amI have the Swift Data 200 built inside my G5. I got it in January and it’s been rock solid. It appears to be even better in that it’s already available, doesn’t take up any more space since it’s all internal and offers SATA speeds (I believe this is Firewire 800, reading the link?).
Here’s the link: https://www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?Category=2490
If you have about 10 minutes or so, click the “Installation Movie” in the middle of the page to get the full picture of how it all comes together and see the speed benchmarks. It took me about 1.5 hours to install and it worked perfectly for me right away. I have 1.6TB, but you can get 2.0TB and double it by adding an external box.

May 25, 2006 at 3:16 amIt looks like a pretty expensive add on. Kind of a slick external enclosure. Nice design and all, but pricey.

May 25, 2006 at 8:15 amExcellent idea, but, ridiculously and prohibitively expensive. A four drive hotswappable SATA enclosure with the same Firmek 4-port adapter can be built for less than 1/4 of the price.

I definitely wouldn’t touch anything like that until the new machines are introduced. I know he says his product is ready for the new machines, but I definitely don’t believe anything I hear about the new machines until they are actually out.
At the price points they’re showing on the website, the new G-Speed from G-Tech looks like it may be an even cheaper solution for the same TB configuration running Fibre Channel.
Neat idea, but not something I’m going to drop money on until we at least see the Intels. The only problem with something that actually attaches to or installs inside any computer is that they can be thrown by design changes in a computer line. External storage pretty much moves from design change to design change. My Fibre Channel array started on a G4 and is now running on a G5 and will move to the new Intel machines when they come out.

May 25, 2006 at 10:56 amSorry to ask a simple question like this but I’ve been doing all my research on cameras ad lenses and now am trying to consider replacing my G5 Dual 2 gig. This thread keeps referring to a new machine. What is the new machine? When is it expected to come out and where can I read up on it?
Thanks

As you have seen, the laptops, Minis and iMacs have all switched to Intel Processors. The desktop machines, currently the G5, will be the last machines to switch over to Intel chips later this year. This is the “new machine” we’re all talking about.
Generally these machines are debuted by Apple at a major event such as the WWDC in San Francisco. Normally that event is in June, but it has been pushed back to August leading speculation that the new desktop machine will be debuted at that event.
There is very little “real” information out there about the desktops due to Apple’s famous secrecy about anything new. But a recent issue of MacAddict did a “sneak peek” at in Intel machine. Not a whole lot of information, and certainly no photos, but they did test one.
The one big thing that nobody know about is what the actual machine will look like and whether it will get smaller or larger than the current G5. That’s why I would steer clear of any internal solutions for a G5 until we know exactly what the new machine looks like.
