card not seen on first boot of the day
Posted by Greg Day on August 28, 2006 at 6:19 pmSo this is weird. I have a Kona LHe in a Quad G5. Each morning when I boot the system, the card is not seen. When I shut down and reboot, the card is seen (about 90% success). If I simply restart, it doesn’t fix the problem, only by a complete shut down and reboot. I have tried slot 2 and 3 (Sonnet Tempo card in slot 4 and GeForce 7800 in slot 1) with the same results.
This has been a consistent situation from day one. I’ve reinstalled drivers, reset PRAM, and still have no ideas. Once it’s loaded, the card has performed flawlessly.
Any ideas??
thanks

August 28, 2006 at 8:29 pmput the sonnet in slot2 and the AJA in 3 or 4, and see what happens – see if there is a slot issue.
The sonnet works fine in slot 2

August 28, 2006 at 9:43 pmI’m not trying to be a smartass here but why not just not shut down? There are some cron and system functions that go on “in the middle of the night” that maintain your G5 too that are good to have done. Unless there’s a really long weekend, I tend to leave the G5 on all the time. I am also paranoid about machines that, for no reason, have refused to startup even after flawless performance for years, so at least I get no suprises while my client are walking in the door. I’m all for energy saving, but I’ve been burned enough times with stuff that decides to croak i.e. cards, SCSI drives not mounting, software that won’t boot, blinking question marks, etc.

August 28, 2006 at 11:11 pmcome on steve – he should be able to boot up the system without issues. I would be curious (and I forgot to ask) – if he shuts down, and boots back up, 7 or 8 times – does it work every time ? Becuase if it does, and it only “fails” when it’s off overnight – I wonder if other external devices are left on, and are hanging up, and causing problems.

August 29, 2006 at 3:04 pmYou are right, Bob — he SHOULD be able to reboot everyday without issues. And my damn train shouldn’t get stuck in the tunnel and my car should be able to start on the one day where I can’t be late, etc. etc. It’s just a question of managing entropy, IMO. 🙂

August 29, 2006 at 3:40 pmHi Guys
i started a similar thread a week ago and Mitch has suggested that we go back to Kona driver 1.3. my Kona Lhe has been working fine over the weekend but is not registering today (again!).
it didn’t register in slot 2 so i moved it to slot 3 (which the guys at AJA Recomend as the faster and more accomodating slot) it worked for a while and now it doesn’t.
Is this a driver issue? or a Slot Issue? i run a G5 Quad with the sonnet tempo EP4 in slot 4 and i’m pulling what little hair i have left out!
your help will be most appreciated
Nick

August 29, 2006 at 5:45 pmhi.
having the same problem here with a similar setup (dual g5,
atto fc-42cx, 4,5 gb ram, kona lhe, fcp 5.0.4., latest kona
drives). every monday morning i have to restart twice before
the lhe shows up in the control panel, and one thing just
started happening in the last couple of days is that i keep on
having problems with deck control (fcp says it’s missing) and
today i lost my signal input. a restart seems to fix it.
i think i should be worried. any thoughts? -

August 29, 2006 at 6:15 pmOK, to catch up and recap.
Yes, I do shut down every night. And yes, I shut down all peripherals as well. I’d leave things on, but this is a new room and I’m not 100% confident on power yet (even though I’m attached to a ups).
Things have now gotten worse. I can get the Kona to load OR the Sonnet RAID, but not both. I’m having a harder time getting the RAID to mount and whether or not it does, often the system hangs when trying to shut down or restart. My first boot in the morning again missed the Kona, but the RAID loaded. Next boot – vice versa. Actually got both going the next time, but then after working for about a half hour, everything locked up. Had to force reboot and haven’t had any luck since.
I’ve run every utility I can think of – disk utility, fsck, reset-nvram, TechTool. Everything checks out.
I am going to try reverting to the Kona 1.3 drivers since I’ve always had issues with the Kona not loading even before I added the Sonnet card. FWIW, the Sonnet card is now in Slot 2 and the Kona in 4. Tried Sonnet in 4, Kona 3 and Sonnet 4, Kona 2 – no difference.
Last resort, I will reinstall the entire system.
thanks all for your input

August 29, 2006 at 8:08 pmOk from my little knowledge and from corrispondance from AJA and Sonnet please note the following:
1. Sonnet say that there is no none conflict with the AJA kona card. the card should be in slot 4 on a quad (133mhz)
2. the Aja Cards work better in slot 3 (the 8 lane slot on a quad)after this and speaking with AJA they are sending me a new card and are saying if this doesn’t work then the slots could be faulty as this is not a comon problem with the card
i hope this resolves my problem and helps you all
i’ll keep you posted as to how it works out
Thanks

August 29, 2006 at 8:15 pmThere must be some conflict, or my Sonnet card is dead. I tried booting in Verbose mode and there were a bunch of errors related to the Sonnet card. This setup worked in another quad G5, but isn’t working in the current system. Unfortunately, I can’t try again in the previous machine as it’s no longer here. Everything was working yesterday (after many reboots and utilities), but I have not had any success today.
Whenever the RAID is turned on, it won’t mount. The system will boot, but there is no disk file access. What I mean by that is – if I try to do a file find/spotlight, nothing happens; if I run Disk Utility, it hangs; if I run Cocktail Disk Check, it hangs. When I try to shut down or restart, it hangs. If I turn off the RAID, everything works. And the same results no matter which slot the Sonnet or Kona cards are in (so likely not a slot issue??)
Guess it’s time to call Sonnet…
