  • Capturing HDV Directly into Computer ? (ByPass P2?)

Posted by Chris Lonergan on April 28, 2009 at 11:03 pm

So I am trying to shoot a larger project with an abundance of cameras and think its worth the risk to use FCP to capture 1080i directly from an HVX. Its ether this or let the camera stay dormant from no P2 cards available.

But on running test with my Sony V1U is saying:
To capture HDV source material, both the Capture and Device Control presets must be configured for HDV; otherwise, to capture in another format, both must not be configured for HDV

this is when i try to capture HDV with a non controlable device (running camera). When I put both in HDV and try to capture it stops the capture due to a lack of TC.

Is there a way to get HDV to record right to FCP (6.0.5) as a streaming source from a camera?

    thanks
    -Chris

In the CAPTURE SETTINGS tab in the LOG AND CAPTURE window, turn deck control to UNCONTROLLED DEVICE. Then FCP will not try to look for a tape.

And know that with the HVX-200, you need to use DVCPRO HD settings, not HDV. Figured you knew that as you are testing with your HDV camera, but I wanted to make sure.

And do know that this is a highly unreliable way of shooting and capturing video. Dropped frames, aborted captures…all sorts of issues could arise.

when i go to Audio video settings, I select:
Sequence Preset: HDV 1080i (for the V1U)
    Capture Preset: HDV
Devcice Control Preset: non Controllable Device

    To that i get:
To Capture HDV material, both the Capture and the Device Control Presets must be configured for HDV: Otherwise to capture in another format. both must not be configured to HDV.

I understand the limitations of this record method and again, deem it better than having a cam lay dormant. So the HVX is DVCPro when streaming. Thats good to know, thanks.

YOu can’t capture HDV direct to drive? I think that is what FCP is saying there. Wow…I didn’t know that. I thought you could. I don’t know that format too well…we capture it as ProRes via capture cards.

Ok, after intense research and testing here is what i came up with

This WILL work, but its a tricky work around

    1.
Final Cut 6 will not let you get a capture from an HDV source with out a time code (non controllable device)
    – Hopefully the DVCPRO feed from a HVX will let you use a non contr device, would make my life easier

    2.
Since you can t capture a HDV signal with out a time code, I found a feature in my Sony V1U menu under time code that said (TC: Rec Run or Free Run)
    – I selected Free run, popped in a tape and hit REC for a sec, then paused it. I guess when you start a TC and hit free run it continues to generate it whether its REC or not. and there fore will continue to record in HDV. As i type now i am continuing to record 20 min + of HD footage.
