  • Captured Footage to Seagate Firewire Drive Has Gray Pixilated Flashes

Posted by Howie Young on August 5, 2007 at 1:58 am

    Greetings,

I captured some footage to an external Seagate 300GB Firewire / USB 2.0 drive. When I play my footage through FCP large gray pixilated square areas intermittently flash on the screen and appear throughout each clip in the canvas window.

When I play the same captured footage through QT the file appears clear, however, it is now jerky. It plays and stops and plays and stops for the duration of the clip

My footage captures and plays fine to my internal media hard drives.

What is causing the gray pixilated flashes?

How do I make it stop?

Why is this only happening when I capture to a FireWire Drive?

Are Seagate 300GB Firewire / USB 2.0 brand drives not recommended for FCP video captures?

I’d appreciate any insight into this troubling matter.

    Thanks

    Howie

You can’t use a USB drive with FCP. Has to be at least FW400. USB has high burst speeds but do not maintain proper throughput for capturing / editing video.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am capturing via firewire. My Seagate instruction book indicates the transfer rate for this drive is 400 Mbits/sec. Is this different than FW400?

    Hello Howie,

Please post a screengrab of the grey flashs, you are experiencing. It could be a slow drive which can not keep up with the throughput of the editing.

    Hi Leo

How do I peform a screen grab while the footage is playing?

Once taken, where should I post the image?

    Thanks

    Re-read Walters posting.

USB 2 drives do not have the SUSTAINED throughput necessary for use with FCP, though their burst rate equals or exceeds that of FW400. Its the USB 2 interface thats the problem, not the drive (FW and USB 2 use the same drives)

This is likely to be the source of your problem.
