I’m capturing DV live from the camera (it’s also being recorded to tape)

Here’s my problem: When I set the device control to “uncontrolable device” I get the video, but not the TC from the camera. Instead, each clip starts at TC 0:00:00:00. When I set device control to “NTSC firewire”, FCP starts capturing with the correct TC, but stops after 16 or 17 seconds and gives me a message that the tape has reached the end (even though the tape is still rolling in record.)

Is there a setting that will allow me to capture the same video and TC that is being recorded to tape?

The camera we’re using is a Panasonic DVX 100. FCP is 5.1

    Thanks in advance!

This used to work brilliantly up to FCP 3.0. What you would do is start the camera recording, then hit Capture Now in FCP and you would get video and TC from the camera.

After FCP 4.0, this stopped working and you get the error message you mentioned. If I absolutely have to do this in the field as an offline deal, I simply switch to non-controllable device and turn on the TC display in the camera so I can go back and re-capture later using the on screen TC as a guide.

    Shoot!

My reason for working this way is to increase turn around time, so the visible TC idea won’t work for me. I’m currently capturing with each clip with the TC starting at 00:00:00:00. I’ll edit that media for final output, but I’m also taking “log notes” to help me find things faster once I start editing. This creates two potential problems: ONE, my notes (which reference camera TC) are offset by when the camera rolls and I begin capture (relatively minor if the camera starts at a hour + zero); TWO, now I don’t have recapturable media, which I haven’t needed yet, but……

    Thanks for the work-around Walter!
I’m sure apple has a way for users to make suggestions, i’ve just never done it. Anybody know how to do this?

Once the non controlled clip is captured you can modify the timecode in the modify > timecode menu. You will have to shoot a monitor that is displaying the cameras tc before each take to get this right.

You might want to look at a firestore type of product that records direct to hard drive. This will keep everything in tact and there’s no digitizing involved.

    Brilliant!

Thanks, I’d forgotton that you could modify the start TC after the clip is captured.

I’ve been looking into firestore from time to time. I need a device to hold 8-10 hours of DV, and haven’t seen a big enough hard drive yet. Only a matter of time (& $$) I suppose.

    Thanks, JeremyG

Adrienne has a product ‘AEC-BOX-2’ http://www.adrielec.com that lets ‘capture now’
also get the time code as if there were a VTR present. This BOX reads LTC
and translates into an RS422 “virtual vtr” serial interface that makes
FCP (via an AJA or other board with RS422) think a deck is connected
even though it is live (capture now). This solution may not work the same
for firewire cameras as it does for SDI output cameras/live feeds.
