  • Can’t round trip sequences from FCP into Motion

I have been unable to open FCP sequences in Motion using Edit with External Editor. I do have Motion as the external editor in preferences. Error message is “The document “xxx” could not be opened” There is a Motion icon with a yellow triangle and exclamation mark in the error message panel. I’m using latest version of FCP and Motion, OS 10.5.1 with a 2 X 3GB dual core desktop and plenty of RAM. I cant find anything in the forums. Thanks.

Can’t do that. What you can do is right click on a sequence and choose “send to Motion.” It’ll ask you to save the project. What it’s doing is saving a motion project that you can import into fcp and place in a timeline.

Or, you could highlight a group of clips within the timeline and right click and choose send to motion. This will do the same, except it will automatically place the project within the timeline. From there, you could in the future choose to right click and choose open in editor, because this is a file Motion understands. A motion project file.

To sum up, FCP can import Motion projects. Motion can neither open nor import fcp projects.

FCP can also export AS a motion project and automatically import the resulting project. That’s the whole round-trip thing.
