  • Can’t hear audio in timeline, but meters indicate we have sound!?

    Hi all,

Quick one I’m scratching my head on…all of a sudden I now can’t hear any audio when I play ANY clip in ANY timeline, although I can when played in source window. I’m getting responses from tall the meters, but just no sound via headphones or Mac speakers.

Tried adjusting all combinations of settings with BMD prefs, PPro prefs, removed Perian, updated BMD drivers, switched GPU accel on and off…no joy.

Anyone had this similar problem? My specs are below for ref. I’m running CS5.5.2 and BMD driver 9.5 (previously 9.2.1)

    Cheers guys,
    Jim.

Are your speakers on?! 😉 Kidding…

I have this problem from time to time with Premiere. My only solution has been to restart PPro or reboot the computer.

    Very good! 😉

Yeah, tried restart PP and rebooted mac twice and still no joy…I’ve taken to importing sequence into After Effects to edit via RAM Preview! Not ideal..but short-term fix to get this thing delivered.

Anymore ideas guys? I’ll need to fix it soon!

    Cheers,
    Jim

We’ve seen some issues like that as well, recently with footage that came from Final Cut (live capture) and also from some aiff files. Our solution was to export the audio as a wav file from QT Pro and import that, and all worked nicely after that. Not ideal, but it kept us moving forward.

If you’ve made a Blackmagic sequence the audio will play back through the I/O. Check your Audio Output Mapping preferences.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for responses. Yes, its a BMD sequence, but not using the decklink to output any audio, just to capture it via embedded SDI. I’ve got mapping prefs set to default headphones, but just not taking for some reason.

Also, it’s doing this no matter what clip I throw in a timeline…by that captured uncompressed QTs via the decklink, exported QTs of various flavours from AE or QT Pro and also tried some MPEGs, WMVs, MP3s and straight WAVs – nothing!

Have you tried making a non-Blackmagic sequence?

    A-ha! Yes, that’s done it!

However, I still don’t understand why a BMD sequence suddenly has this problem and I guess I will still need to fix as this is our native mastering format.

Thanks Tero – I guess next stop is Blackmagic support!

I had the same exact problem. It seems to be that if youre playing back a Blackmagic sequence it wants to put the video and audio through the I/O no matter what the settings.

You may also have to check your OS preferences and change the audio output there.

The strange thing is that editing in BMD sequences has worked fine for months and I never have the audio output routed through the card, in the OS or in the PPro prefs…so I just don’t understand why it’s suddenly started doing this!

Only thing I can think of is that when I updated BMD driver last week to 9.2.1 (then subsequently 9.5 today) then it introduced the problem. I’d been on 8.0 for months and worked fine, but then had a HD capture problem last week (which bizarrely righted itself for no reason the other day!) and started updating driver to try to fix. Also jumped from CS5.5.0 to 5.5.2 which didn’t appear to help at the time.

I’ll go back to v8 BMD driver and report back if this helps. Unfortunately I don’t think I can downgrade back to 5.5.0 without completely reinstalling can I?

    Cheers,
    Jim
