Can you trust FCP’s Title Safe
Posted by Julian Clarke on August 4, 2006 at 7:54 pmHi,
I just came back from a QC session where we were looking at a titled 16:9 squeezed Digibeta master that I had generated in FCP 5. To my surprise some of my titles appeared to be out of title safe on the EQ system. When I come back and look at my project however, I am just on the line of title safe. So, my question is, is FCP’s title safe reliable? Should I be concerened here?
Thanks
Julian

August 4, 2006 at 8:33 pmWere you not monitoring external video or what? Titles out of safe range is one of the big dangers of not monitoring output on a 16:9 capable monitor.

August 4, 2006 at 8:39 pmYes, I was monitoring on a 16:9 monitor and the titles looked fine. But I think title safe, usually ers on the side of safety, so this didn’t necessarily mean that I was not outside “safe”.

Then why do I see title safe and TV safe areas in my DVCPRO HD 16:9 sequence? Isn’t Digital Heaven’s solution how to get 4:3 title safe areas into a 16:9 project?
Or is that what we are talking about here?

August 4, 2006 at 9:10 pmOH, you were monitoring and the titles were still out of safe on another system? Hmm…that’s kinda scary. I’m gonna look into getting that DH plug then. You can’t have stuff like that happening in the online.

August 4, 2006 at 9:11 pmFCP’s “Title safe” is well within the “action safe” area so if your titles were on the verge of going off-screen (if that’s what you meant) then the system you were watching it on must have a lot of underscan.
Or else perhaps the system that was displaying the program has much stricter standards for what they feel is “title safe”.
In the limited amount of widescreen things I’ve done so far, I hadn’t run into a problem where titles have threatened to go out of bounds.

August 4, 2006 at 9:18 pmI sent off stills of my titles to my broadcaster so they could QC the positioning and they all passed.
You are using the INNER square for your title guides, right?

August 4, 2006 at 9:21 pmMy titles do not look like they are on the verge of going offscreen… they look fine. I’m watching them on a very ordinary Sony PVM-20MRU with a 16:9 button. When I was in QC session they had a series of guides that showed up on screen showing there title safe, where I found my titles were often venturing outside their guides. Again it looked fine on there monitor, but OUTSIDE safe. From what I understand title safe, is mostly a conservative estimate relevant to ancient televisions. Everything I’ve been monitoring this show on, has been made this century. I’m just trying to be diligent in delivering a master here that will meet everyone’s standards and expectations. It was somewhat alarming to have FCP’s title safe not match to the title safe in the EQ system.
