Is there a filter that will allow me to stretch my 4X3 footage to fill a 16X9 frame WITHOUT blowing it up?

I’m looking for something like the Justify mode Panasonic monitors use to fill the screen where they stretch the left and right sides of the image leaving the center mostly intact.

If you want to convert 4×3 footage into 16×9, you have 2 options. You can crop off the top and bottom, or you can stretch it. There is no way to keep all of your information and convert it to 16×9 without distorting it.

I wasn’t clear before: I fully expect to distort it– I just didn’t want to use the only option I’m familiar with: blowing up the image and cropping the top and bottom. I’m looking for a solution that simply stretches the left and right sides to fill the 16X9 frame. I don’t see a filter in FCP that does this.

Ideally, a “smart” stretch that leaves the center of the image more or less intact.

Another great free plugin – thanks Andy!

What I do is in the Distort box under the motion tab simply enter the 1/2 width value of the 16:9 comp into the four Upper Left/right etc. You are essentially pulling the four corners over to lock to the corner of your 16:9 frame.
