I recently had a computer crash and I’m in the process of reinstalling everything on my hard drive. I’ve just updated all of the P2 firmware, but I’m having a problem. When I download a P2 card to my computer (using Shotput) I use to be able to view the video thumbnails in the finder. I found this to be a great way to do a quick check of the footage. Unfortunately now when I click on the video folder, it just shows that they are MXF files, but I can’t view them. I have FCP 6.04 and Quicktime 7.5.5 installed, and I’m running Mac OS 10.5.6. It seem like there is some sort of plug-in that I’m missing, but I’m not sure what.

    Perhaps you’re forgetting P2CMS?

I have P2CMS installed and I can view the cards if I ingest them into that program, but I use to be able to just view the thumbnails as video. That’s what I’m trying to get back.

If you select an MXF in the VIDEO folder, right click and choose, Open With > Quicktime, it doesn’t work?

No, that works no problem. The problem is prior to my computer crash, the thumbnail itself was a video that I could play in the finder without having to open anything. But for some reason I can’t do that anymore.

Okay, now that we know it works, get info on one of the .MXF clips and then change the ‘open with’ application to Quicktime and hit Change All. in this screen grab it’s greyed out as that option is selected already:

Ok, I changed the settings to always open with quicktime, but still no video thumbnail (preview). I tried to put a screen grab up, but unfortunately I couldn’t figure out how to upload it onto the post.
But so far I’ve done everything you’ve said and it all works. I just don’t have the video preview in the finder.

Have you clicked the little arrow down so that you can see the preview?

Yes, the little arrow is clicked down. One difference between what I see on my computer and yours is that your .MXF files have picture icons with them, as does the preview. On my computer instead of a picture I see the grey .MXF icon (like you see when you hit “get info”). That seems to be my problem.

Thanks for all of you help.

Can you please upload a screen grab?

Take the screen grab, click the little camera looking button, then click ‘Choose File’, then click ‘Upload Image’, then click the image once it’s uploaded and copy and paste the ’embed’ or ‘link’ link into this message.
