  • Burn Large .avi files to one / many dvd’s! Experts wanted!

Good afternoon–first off, you guys are probably the BEST in the world, so I’m hoping for just a little help with my challenging situation.

I have LARGE AVI files (12 gig, and even 26 gig files, uncompressed)on my pc and need to get them to DVD! They area all 2 hours long. I’d like to burn these videos to a DVD or multiple DVD’s if necessary to retain pretty good video quality.

When i’m rendering, how can i ‘fit’ these large files on 1 or 2 dvd’s? Which settings do you use? (For some reason, I cannot choose custom under mpeg-2, so I use mpeg-1). I think anything i try in mpeg-2 is too large so i tried mpeg-1 and it fit, but only filled 1.6 gigs and i’d like to improve the quality of the video. Is there a ‘make fit’ button somewhere that would use up all the space of a single DVD? I’d like to try that.

Also, if a single DVD is just too small, i’d like to burn it on say 2 DVD’s instead of one. I know how to edit the video, cut out parts i dont like and create a rendering area, i just dont know how to burn it on 2 DVD’s instead of 1. Or 3 dvd’s instead of one. Can you please assist with this. What i’m essentially asking for is: Is there a way to render one large video (avi file) and burn it onto 2 or 3 DVD’s??? That’s it!!

Now someone told me, since the original file is a large AVI file to render that file as ‘avi’ again on the NTSC DV template, and then with architect will convert the avi file to mpeg 2. Is this correct? Please let me know!!

Thank you so much! Any help would just make my week, you have no idea! I’ve watched many videos but simply cannot figure this one out…if i get help, i’ll do ANYTHING to make it up to you,

    Thanks kindly!
    Martin

Are you talking about DV-avi files? Then your 12Gb file is just 1 hour.

Normally we render the video in Vegas to MPEG2 using the mainconcept codec within Vegas and the audio to AC3. Gives these two files exactly the same name and place them in the same folder.
In DVDA, just import the video file and the audio file will follow automaticly.

You will see that your 1h file will fit nicely on the DVD as MPEG2.

Even the larger 2h file will fit easily when you render with a lower bitrate, but this might affect the quality a bit. A solution could be the use of a double layer DVD for the larger file.

Never use the MPEG1 option, since this is meant for a low quality video CD

Theo, you are a scholar and a gentleman for replying to my thread, so let’s get to it…

I’m not sure if they are DV AVI files, I do not think so. They are simply Single files that were transferred from the camcorder to the computer via Windows Vista. (The camcorder was an older Sony Camcorder that took 8mm tapes and 8mm HI tapes. The tapes that were 8mm (older tapes) recorded for 2 hours, exactly, 120 minutes. So it is my goal to transfer that 2 hour footage to one or 2 dvd’s. I wouldn’t even mind doing it on 2 dvd’s, IF the quality will be better. I just don’t know how to do it. What do you recommend that I do?

Should i render the large footage in vegas again or go straight to architect? Which settings do you recommend that i use. What bit rate? Is there a way to burn the very large (25gig) .avi files onto say 2 DVD’s? If you would assist me with this, I’d be ETERNALLY grateful!

    Sincerely,

    Martin Marek

    Martin,

The most important question is: what do you want to do with the DVD. Do you want to make a DVD that can be viewed on television. Or you you just want to make a data DVD in the same way as you can store your photographs, your WORD files, your .dif files etc.

Oh, I see, not a problem.

I want to create these DVD’s for viewing on the DVD player and on television! I would like to know if it is possible to burn it on a regular 4.7 gig disk or maybe on 2 4.7 gig disks if possible. Can you assist please? Thank you so much in advance!

What version of Vegas are you using? If the pro version(s) you should have no issue going into custom and adjusting the bitrate for the file to fit more on the disc or to increase quality. You will want to use mpeg-2 and allow Vegas to do the conversion for you, not DVD Architect.
(choose the template for DVDA that fits your project- either widescreen or standard), then render your audio separately as an ac3 file.

You will need to download a bitrate calculator to get more exact settings for your DVD. You can find one here: Bitrate Calculator

BTW you have analog tapes. How do you plan to convert them to digital for capture?

‘I want to create these DVD’s for viewing on the DVD player and on television!’

In that case you can follow the guidelines from my first posting. In that way the file of 1 h (12,9) GB can be easily burned on a 4,7Gb DVD. And for the larger file you can use the bitrate calculator that was suggested by Jeremy rasnic.

Thanks for the response Mr. Rasnic (Croatian?)

I’m using the trial Vegas movie studio 9. Would you please tell me more about how to render the video to TWO (2) DVD’s? When i try to render the video to one DVD, it ends up being some 6 GB and i cannot fit that on a 4.7 gig DVD. My questions are:

    1. How can i render it to fit on two DVD’s? Is that possible?

    2. Do i need to have another version of Vegas to go into ‘custom’ and adjust the bit rate to fit it on one DVD?

    3. If no, then which option do i change? Do i adjust the slider (that shows quality 1-30) or the actual bit rates. If it is the bit rates only, according to your calculator, the combined rate should be 4853 and max 9570, should i adjust only those two, and what about the min?

I wonder if not having pro is what is limiting me, please comment

    thanks much really appreciate it,
    martin

From what I have gleaned from the Movie Studio line is that they were more or less meant for “Families/Hobbiest” and the Pro versions for the “big Boys”. You can get the Trial of Vegas Pro 8/9 as well.

If you want the highest quality possible then you really should put these on two 1 hr DVD’s. Drop the file on the timeline and split the event around the 1 hr mark (use the S key and delete the part after the split). Then render that as MPEG2 using one of the DVD templates. When that’s done, drop the file on the timeline again and split it at the same point but this time delete the event before the split and move the rest to the beginning of the timeline and render as DVD MPEG2 again. You will then need a program like DVD Architect to author and burn a 2 DVD’s from these files.
