Sure there is. Who owns Vegas? Begins with S and ends with Y. You know, the same folks who developed BluRay.
Why is it you can purchase FCP for $1,299 but can’t run it on Windows? Not that hard, would be easy to port, in fact it started out as Macromedia Final Cut for Windows. Could be the company that makes the software also wants to sell their own hardware…..

Well I think what we have here is an honest difference of opinion. Because I do care. FCP is so good in so many ways …. it just seems a damn shame to me that they can’t incorporate this most needed feature. I’m all about seamless and easy when it comes to workflow …. and I’ve got this funny feeling that I’m not alone.

Nope, you’re not. And having the ability to author BluRay discs have set my shop far apart from many other shops that have not added the capabilities. We’re 20 months ahead of a lot of folks.

I’m in the Pacific N.W. region and did 5 BD titles alone in January.
my facility and one other are the only game in town.

Apple hasn’t been avoiding the Blu-ray thing at all. The powers that be at Apple have already provided us with their answer. They said no.

I’m learning something every time I read one of these threads, thanks.
Still, I don’t buy the cost excuse as a reason for Apple to drag feet. From a hardware standpoint, it would be up to me as the customer, when configuring the next Apple tower I want to buy, what sort of optical drives I want in it. And If I want BluRay drives, yes I am going to pay for them, including tacked-on license fees. Those folks that don’t need a BD drive in their computer simply won’t ask for it. That’s not different from people who choose only CD drives instead of DVD superdrives when they configure a purchase.
Apple theoretically is part of the BluRay consortium, isn’t it? Theoretically, Sony should not be standing in their way, the HD vs. BD wars are over, time for everyone to make mioney off of the winner, BD, and what accomplishes that is having more and more players and burners out there… growing the market for *everyone*.
I find it hard to believe the software coding is beyond what the folks at Apple can do; my guess is they have had the port ready to go for over a year. I believe in my heart of hearts that this is all about the lawyers and nothing else.
Now I take what Walter says to heart, I do. And if tomorrow my boss tells me he needs me to be making BD disks by Friday, I would have to go out and buy the same hardware and software Walter has to do it. But I don’t want to. We already have a huge investment in our Apple gear. I don’t think it unreasonable that Apple keeps up with other competing platforms and sells us an upgrade. That works. I would rather that Apple keep up with everybody else and update their software and hardware, that I already have alarge investment in. Perhaps that is selfish or immature of me, I’ve been both of those things before; I’ll live.

Yes, Apple is in the consortium, but that does not mean they get a free ride for the rights to BluRay code for their authoring software. They would have to pay a licensing fee and it’s still quite high. Sony has to protect the price of Blu-It (I think that’s still around $50,000+) so you have to figure the licensing fees to Apple for a product that only sells for $1,299 would be too much to swallow.
Are you willing to pay $5,000 or more for a version of Final Cut Studio that would include BluRay capabilities to support the licensing fees?
This is precisely why we invested in DoStudio. Have you priced out a commercial BluRay duplication job yet? The mastering and licensing fees are still very high. One set of licensing fees is more than we invested in our own solution so that’s why we went this route. It was literally cheaper for us to invest in a new computer, new software, BluRay duplicator, DVD Duplicator and Printer than it was for us to do our first BluRay job through a commercial replication house. And now that we’ve completed 15 BluRay jobs to date, that equipment has been paid for more than 10 times over.

If memory serves, when the HD DVD/Blu-ray wars were in full song wasn’t Apple solidly in the HD DVD camp? Is that not why DVDSP is still set up to do HD DVD? Perhaps Sony is remembering that prior allegiance and is still pi**ing in Apple’s corn flakes.

Nope, they joined the board of the BDA (BluRay Disc Association) in 2005. Here’s the Wiki entry and you can find articles dating back to 2005 to find other announcements.
