February 25, 2009 at 7:13 pmThe licensing fees mentioned I think relate to if you’re going to put theatrical movies on them.
That’s not my market. I just wanna make news VNRs, PSA’s, and training videos on them. Everything my shop puts out is public domain, we WANT more people to share it.

February 25, 2009 at 7:14 pmHi Steve,
If Apple weren’t one of the largest and wealthiest computer companies in the world I might accept this excuse. They’ve got the resources, they’ve got the clout, they’ve got the customer base … make it happen. All the competition already has. I am Apple’s customer, I buy their computers, I buy their software, so it is to them that I look for a solution. We’re not talking about some little unimportant detail here. Having a reasonable workflow to deliver and show your HD work goes to the heart of the entire video business. Without it, your dead in the water. -

BluRay is not a make or break for any professional company. If you needed blue ray two years ago you should have purchased BluRay two years ago. I did, going on 20 months now we’ve had the technology.
First we tried Adobe Encore with very limited success. Now we have NetBlender’s DoStudio which is capable of commercial spec BluRays. I even have a dual BluRay duplicator and a commercial quality printer. So while you’re sitting around waiting for Apple to decide if they are going to include BluRay at all, I’ve already invested in BluRay technology and earned back 10x what I invested.
I really don’t understand this argument of “I needed it two years ago and until Apple gives it to me I’m going to pout and demand that they do.”
If you need it today, there are solutions today and have been for two years.

February 25, 2009 at 7:47 pmHi Walter,
Yes I fully understand that there are, and have been “workound” solutions for this Blu Ray issues for quite awhile. And yes I agree, if someone needs Blu Ray today they can go out there and configure some third party solution. In this thread I am not talking about my personal situation, I am truly amazed that Apple has avoided this Blu Ray solution for so long. This gets away from the Apple’s “Complete Edit Suite” marketing strategy. This is a company that was built on cutting edge and elegant computer solutions. In the case of Blu Ray…grade F.

February 25, 2009 at 8:06 pmWhy do you expect Apple to put Blu Ray burners in the Mac Pro or MB Pro? If they do, you will complain that a system configured with a Blu Ray burner is way beyond what you can afford. They are going to pass on the licensing fee onto the consumer.
You take things for granted and do not understand the business end of the issue.

Ok, to quote you:
We need it now, we needed it two years ago .. no more excuses Apple…deliver this now or get ready for future strategy sessions in Cupertino sitting around tables discussing why FCP sales and your Professional customers have gone away..
So if you don’t need it now, why the “we?” Again, this is a useless argument from my standpoint. Any professional who refuses to take on or offer BluRay work for a client just because Apple won’t support the technology is in a losing proposition. That client will go find someone else who can do the work and who knows if they will return to you.
On the other hand, someone like me who has already invested in the technology is already winning new clients just because I have it as an add-on. I can even offer discs for free for certain projects. I’m retaining clients and gaining new ones while over in the Business and Marketing forum we’re talking about folks losing clients and losing jobs.
I really don’t care if Apple never offers BluRay support in DVDSP because that means I will continue to have an advantage over anyone on here who just sits around waiting for Apple.

February 25, 2009 at 8:14 pmExplain to me the licensing fees you think are associated with a BluRay burner. At about $230 a pop, hardly seems expensive.

February 25, 2009 at 8:16 pmI agree with you Walter, but it doesn’t get Apple off the hook, as far as I’m concerned. There is no reason why you can make and view a great Blu-Ray right out of Vegas, just by adding a burner, yet you can’t even play one on a Mac.

The licensing fees to include the BluRay authoring code in your software. Has NOTHING to do with the burners.
