Just got off of the phone with B&H non-linear where we were building a FCP MacPro system. The rep had something suprising (and maybe just wrong considering no one here has mentioned it) to say about blue ray authoring. He said that you can build a HD DVD in DVDSP, save it as a disc image, and then burn it with an exturnal blue ray writer. He said that he did it himself yesterday. I questioned him on this for a couple on min. and he seemed very sure of himself. However, I have not head this on any forum so I do not think it is true. Any comments?

Second question, I am building a system. I do not plan to do uncompressed HD. Prores HQ will be the most quality that I will need for my projects. So that is why I selected this drive (it is still subject to change.) Also, I do not have the funds now for a “high end” monitor for color correcting for I am going to use a Samsung 32″ until I can afford something else. Having said this, I still would like you opinions on how to improve the system. Take a look and make any suggestions, they will be appreciated.

Have never heard of this and would not trust that information. HD DVD and BluRay are two different formats and are incompatible with each other. You can create the proper BluRay MPEG-2 files using Compressor, but that’s as far as Apple software will go.

We use NetBlender from DoStudio (Windows Only) for our BluRay authoring.

We have used the new version of Adobe Encore with success. It has been very limited DVD’s, no menus just have it play a video. I think your supposed to match your ram in these new systems.

What Dave says is what I heard as well. I think you and the B&H sales engineer are having some mis-communication regarding specific terms.

And I am SO hoping to see some news from Apple this April, at NAB or outside of it, about finally getting the “last mile” of the BluRay authoring chain complete within Apple apps. The use of Adobe Encore is a stop-gap solution, I really want to be able to deliver BD off of FCP/DVDSP as I do for an SD product now. It makes me nuts that we’ve been waiting so long for this. Our shop really NEEDS it.

    Walter,

Can you encode an H.264 in Compressor that will work for Blu-ray? There is a preset -(HD DVD H.264). I tried bringing that into Toast, but it wants to re-encode it, so I assume it it’s no good, although it wants to re-encode my Blu-Ray MPEG-2 files as well.

We’ve never gotten that to work and the folks at NetBlender told us nobody is doing that yet as there are issues somewhere along the line. We only do MPEG-2 and it’s flat out gorgeous.

We really need to team-up and flood Apple with requests. This is getting to be beyond ridiculous. It’s like there are no priorities at Apple anymore except the iPhone.

It has gotten to the point that Apple is doing serious damage to its entire professional apps division by waiting so long to incorporate a Blu Ray solution with FCP. We need it now, we needed it two years ago .. no more excuses Apple…deliver this now or get ready for future strategy sessions in Cupertino sitting around tables discussing why FCP sales and your Professional customers have gone away…. and how you can get them back.

What you don’t seen to understand is the licensing fee for Blu Ray is way beyond what you can afford. That is why Apple is hesitant in its support in FCS.

It is SONY who you need to contact to lower the licensing fees.

So, why has this been available on the Windows platform for so long? Does Microsoft get a break on the licensing fees?

  • Steve Eisen

There are no breaks for licensing fees. It’s just as available on a Mac. There are better options on the Windows platform.
