black and white video in the canvas
I am having an inconsistent issue that I can’t resolve. For certain projects, clips turn black and white in the canvas when I highlight them. It appears fine until I highlight the clip to make an edit. This is causing issues for a particular project because it’s green screen footage that I need to key out and when I highlight it, it turns black and white. I’ve asked all my editor friends and no one seems to know what the issue is or how to fix it. Can someone help me?

well there are two things that should be checked – what kind of plugin are you using for your keys, and what is the codec of your sequence/clips?

well, that is a great question. I’m newer to editing so I’m still trying to wrap my head around codecs and how they work. In this particular project I was given a DVD which I ripped using MPEG streamclip.(I later realized I should have just grabbed the video files off the DVD rather than ripping it) I’ve been known at times to mix codecs a bit on accident.
In this particular case I thought I had set the footage codec to DVCPro and I think the sequence was set to DV NTSC 48khz. I later went back and changed the footage to ProRes422 because Final Cut was wigging out a bit and running very slow. It ran faster but I was still getting the black and white effect in the canvas.
In some other cases the footage has been in H264 all giving me the same black and white effect. I should clarify that this happens for regular footage too and not just green screen footage.
I hope all that made sense. I could really use your help -

i definitely know u! hilarious dude!
ok this is what you need to do. make sure your sequence codec is the same as your clip codec. to do this, you can open a new sequence with whatever settings you want. then take your clip and drag it into the sequence. you should get a message that tells you the clip and sequence settings don’t match and it will ask if you want to change the sequence to match. Say yes. Then you will have a sequence that will play back your footage with no rendering. If you check the sequence settings of your new sequence, you can apply those setting to your problematic black and white sequence.
Oh and you can’t cut reliably with H264. Convert to pro res! -

I moved back. In September it will be 2 years. I’ve been actually working steady as a freelancer. Was just doing some work in LA last week. Just got back to Indy yesterday. Where are you and Tim working? Tell him I said hello.

Brian, is there any other issue that this could be within final cut? I setting or something? I addressed the codec issue and it doesn’t seem to be fixing it. I even went back and opened some older projects that I never had a problem with and even those canvases are black and white. Any thoughts?
