  • Beefen up G5 to run Final Cut pro 6 or 7

Posted by Carlos Carmona on August 30, 2009 at 7:45 pm

    Whats up folks?
I just bought a used 1.6 GHz PowerPc G5 tower with 1.25 gb of ram, running on 10.3.9, and two internal hd’s 80g and 240g. It has the old Final Cut Pro 4.5 running on it. I want to beef up this machine so I can run either FCP 6 or 7. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The only way you can beef it up to run FCP7 would be to trade it in for a newer Intel Mac, because that’s is a requirement.

With the addition of 4Gb RAM or more the machine will run FCP6, albeit very slowly.

Hope you didn’t pay too much for that machine. FCP 7 is Intel Only.

And to run Studio 2 (FCP 6) you would have want another 2-4GB RAM, replace the 80GB hard drive with at least a 250 to 500GB drive, probably update the graphics card and potentially add a video card for video playback. And good luck trying to find those graphics cards and video cards since your machine is PCI-X and nobody is making PCI-X cards any longer.

By then you’re probably already halfway to the base model Intel Mac Pro or even a full priced 20″ iMac Intel which runs FCP 7 beautifully.

Hey, I’ve got an AVID 9000 Meridian system that I paid $80,000 for.
Can I get this to run FCP 7 ? And how do I get my 1″ VTR
(Sony BVH-3000) that I paid $60,000 for to record HD ?

I have a Leitch NTSC black generator that was $3000. Can it do tri level sync ? How about my Sony BVM1910 CRT ? What is the option card for HD ? I have a TV Logic HD LCD monitor that was $6000 – how can I see 2K video on this ?

And for CRYIN OUT LOUD, when will Blackmagic write OS-X 10.6 drivers for my Digital Voodoo 64AV and my AJA Kona SDI card ?

    (anyone want a Tascam DA-88) ?

Oh my word. The Digital Voodoo was part of the very first FCP demo I saw back in 2001. I was blown away by the fact that this cheap tool from FCP could already do HD back then.

    Wooooooooooooooooooooo, the DA-88. A classic……

Are you sure that Digital VooDoo did HD?

Regarding the 1.6 G5. That machine was worth less than the dual G4s it was succeeding. You’ll get more power out of the current entry level Mac mini. Sorry.

You forgot that all this upgrade should be free.

Yep, that was the rage at the demo. An actual HD monitor (probably some $50,000 Sony at the time) showing some landscape footage shot in HD playing off FCP.

Oh Bob, 2K is so last year. It’s all about 4K now, haven’t you been sucked in by the RED hype? But even that’s passe. Real men know it’s all about Super Hi-Vision:
