  • Batch EXPORT using Sony XDCAM Transfer?

Posted by Dave Flores on February 22, 2010 at 2:40 am

I can not find a way to Sony XDCam export more than one clip at a time. Is this a limitation to the Sony XDCam transfer software and FCP working together?

I’m trying to export Apple ProRes 422 to an XDCam deck PDW-F70.

    Work-arounds tested:

Test 1 – Batch Export FCP feature using the XDCAM encoding
It’s definitely XDCam encoding but XDCam Transfer refuses to accept it. I’m assuming this is because it encodes it with an “Apple XDCam” and the file is described as a Final Cut Pro movie.

Test 2 – Drag the media to mounted XDCam disk
I didn’t really think this would work because the media is not .mxf but was hopeful that the XDCam Transfer might intervene and encode automatically since it seems to want to pop its head out anytime anything goes to and from the XDCam deck.

Test 3 – Batch through Compressor
Same results as Test 1, only it’s a standard quicktime movie- not like this really makes any difference.

Test 4 – Exporting a sequence of clips
Well yes, this works. BUT now I have one huge clip and all my individually labeled clips which the camera men and myself worked so hard to properly label are blended into one and lost.

Soooooooo, any bright ideas out there of how to do this besides exporting each of my thousands of clips one at a time?

    Thanks,
    Dave Flores

Look in FC for “Export to XDCAM”.

Are trying to export TO XDCAM HD or export FROM XDCAM HD?

Batch Export from FCP goes to Quicktime ONLY. This is used for backups and multiple masters, not for going to tape or disc.

From your post, it sounds like you have a group of clips that you want to put on an XDCAM disc, right?

Well, if this is the case… Then, its just like recording in the field. One clip at a time. You con only write to disc one at a time for now. Being able to export a series of clips using the correct structure for XDCAM would be a wonderful addition and ability. Hopefully the future of XDCAM holds this.

    @ Wayne
I am trying to export to XDCam HD, but from FCP to an XDCam disk/deck.

Regarding the one at a time export limitation: thanks for confirming this for me. It would be very nice and useful if FCP could work with the XDCam transfer software to do several clips in a batch. I’m curious why this was not included.

A while back, I posted an Applescript that drives XDCAM Transfer for doing exactly this except to MP4.

I don’t have an XDCAM deck to try this out but If you change the ‘as MP4’ to ‘as MXF’ it should do as you require.

The first step is to use FCP’s batch export to make QuickTime movies. You can then run the Applescript to export the .movs to disc. The important thing is to be very sure that your settings are right when you make the Quicktime movies. Otherwise you will waste time exporting .movs that you won’t be able to write to the disc.

I just left the Batch Export settings as ‘Use Item Settings’ but if you have Pro Res on your timeline then you will need to pick the appropriate XDCAM preset from the list. It would definitely be worth just trying out a few short clips to make sure everything is working before you go for the real thing.

    HTH.

    @ Daniel
That’s a clever way of doing things. I’ve never really messed with apple scripts so I’ll have to educate myself on this first.

But hey, if this works I’ll be super happy.

    Hi Daniel,
I’m trying to use your Applescript (found at the link you posted) for batch exporting clips to XDCAM disc, and I keep getting this error when trying to compile: “Syntax Error: Expected end of line, etc. but found identifier”. The first two lines of code do work, but the last line won’t compile. Do you know what the problem is?

Also, our version of XDCAM Transfer is 2.9.0, not 2.11 if that’s the issue.
    Thanks!

    Hi Meeri,

XDCAM Transfer’s Applescript support did not appear until version 2.11 so you will need to upgrade. The latest version is 2.12.

Once you have done that, you shouldn’t have any problems.

    Good luck.
