avid vs final cut pro
Posted by Stevejr on May 16, 2005 at 4:15 pmHi all,
I went to NAB and tried both the avid express pro and final cut pro system. Final Cut Pro seem in almost every situation out preform the avid. And its cheaper, plus apple has just brought the costs of computers down. I am a PC person and am going to have to switch to MAC. I would rather edited on a PC. The problem is I need a good system. I need a system that will render the fastest. At NAB the AVID with MOJO was slower then the final cut pro. I tested them. I know.
So,why should I buy an Avid instead of a final cut pro system.I have not finalized my decision yet. The reason why I am going overboard with this is cause I am scared with going with MAC. But final cut pro is better then avid. Please let me know guys. Thanks,

Reminds me of the print ad that had a dude in a Boston hat sitting between two big guys on a NY subway wearing Yankees gear. Brass B’s, man!
Anyhoo, it looks like you’ve already answered your question – and that’s good because you know your needs best. It all depends on your needs. I know of folks that worked on FCP for years, took one look at Avid’s title tool and filled their shorts with Jergens. It’s cuz they had more need for titling than graphics. Some Avid folks see that you can just lasoo a whole audio track in FCP, click on a couple things in pull-down menus and whammo! You’ve got yourself a split-audio mix. Again, why would an off-line editor care about that?
Many people here might disagree with me, but my biggest sell is the face that FCP is less hardware-based than my Media Composer. I’ve been on a number of Mac & Windows Avids and and equal number of FCP Macs. The Avids react and interact better. Not always faster, mind you, but better. Less video refresh problems. Less rendering. More true-to-the-mix where audio is concerned.
Sounds like you’re already convinced though. You wording is like my wife’s when I walk in the door at 2am.

May 16, 2005 at 5:03 pmHi Again,
I was at NAB. AVID with MOJO was slower at rendering. Final Cut Pro was smoother and faster. If I had my way I would love to get avid express pro on a PC. PC is where I want to edited. But Final Cut Pro is the better editing software program. Now if I wanted to edited some real hugh projects all the time then I would probably get a higher end avid on PC. But the express system is just not that good when compared to others.
