AVID codecs for exporting FCP video
Posted by Tim Allison on May 1, 2009 at 5:16 pmI’ve got some video here on my FCP Mac, and a buddy wants a copy to work with on his PC AVID. Another post said to download AVID codecs, and export.
First, is this the best way to share some simple video?
Second, where do I find these AVID codecs?

May 1, 2009 at 5:29 pmYou can find those codecs at Avid’s website. Look for “Avid codecs LE”, or “Avid Quicktime codecs LE”, or something like that.

Got some video from…where? How was it captured? What codec is it captured in? YOu don’t say that it is from and Avid, so why do you need the Avid codecs? OH…to get him copies. Well, they can just import the footage and Avid will convert if it needs to.
Why are you using two edit systems? Trying to mix cuts and footage from both is recipe for disaster.

May 1, 2009 at 7:09 pmOK, I was trying to be brief, so I guess you want the whole complicated story, huh? 🙂
I work at a university in Mississippi. I have a friend that works at a university in Louisiana. My Louisiana friend needs some campus scenes from my campus for a project he is working on. My department uses Final Cut Pro. His department uses a PC version of Avid. I don’t know which version. My specific department didn’t have any campus scenes, but another friend across campus (who also uses FCP) does have plenty of these kinds of scenes, and he has them sitting on a server where he has quick and easy access to them. To complicate matters somewhat, these campus scenes are standard def 16×9 24p video. I really don’t know what exact codec they are presently in, but I would guess a DV-50 24p codec. My Louisiana friend will be mastering in an interlaced format. He has made similar requests from other campuses all across the country, and will end up mixing and matching all sorts of formats into his final master.
So now the real question: what is the quickest, easiest, and best way to get approximately 2 minutes of video from a Final Cut Pro system in Mississippi to an Avid system in Louisiana?

May 1, 2009 at 10:42 pmAhhh…there we go. This is the kind of detail we crave…full workflow. WE can’t give proper advice without the full details.
Well…DV50 or DV/NTSC (DV25)? This I would check. But I think if you just gave him the raw files he should be able to work with them. DV50 might be questionable, as I don’t know if that is an FCP only codec like DVCPRO HD is…DV50 is DVCPRO 50, a panasonic format. Send him a 5 second test clip in this format and see if it works. If not, then convert a clip to Photo JPEG at 75% or 100% (both) and see if those work for him…that is a more universal format that is compressed well.
