I just reloaded Vegas 6 into another machine that I built. My son took a small video with his digital camera, of which I downloaded into Vegas 6. When I bring it up on the timeline, only an audio track comes up, no video track. If I import it into Premiere Pro in comes up as both audio & video track. If I play it from the hard drive, it plays also. I put in a training video for Vegas in the cd/dvd player and it tells me that Media Player 9 cannot play this dvd because of a possible missing Codec. Could this be the problem with Vegas also? I downloaded a Microsoft Codec file, but still the same problem.

Even though it claims to be an AVI, the video clip uses an MJPEG (Motion JPEG) codec.
One solution is to install the trial version of the MainConcept MJPEG codec.
Supposedly it’ll read the file without displaying a watermark.
If you like it, it’s only $21 to buy it.

I already have MainConcept. I downloaded a program that checks all your codecs on the computer, and it says “This Decoder in not compatible with the syncronization feature of Windows Media Player 10. I have Media Player 9. I also show having 2 MainConcept Video Decoder files. One says “MainConcept (Adobe 2) Video Decoder. Have you ever heard of a pack of codec files by the name of K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. Not sure whether to install it or not.

    I already have MainConcept.

We’re talking about two different codecs here.
You don’t have the MainConcept MJPEG codec installed and that’s the one you need.

“Have you ever heard of a pack of codec files by the name of K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. Not sure whether to install it or not.”

Sure have and I wouldn’t touch that codec pack with a 100 ft. pole!!
It’s well known that it installs all kinds of useless junk on your system that you definitely do not need.

    Mike,
I downloaded a program: “Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility”. It checks to see what decoders are installed on your system. These are the ones it comes up with: MainConcept Mpeg Decoder-mcdsmpeg.ax, MainConcept (Adobe 2) Mpeg Decoder-ad2mcdsmpeg.ax, ATI Mpeg Video Decoder-atidvcr.dll, ATI CC Multiplexer-atidvcr.dll.
I had also downloaded Windows Media Encoder 9 Series, and that did not good. All of the above files, are considered uncompatable with WMP, according to the checkup utility. I notice that you also have to purchase that MainConcept Mjpeg file that you are talking about. I don’t understand why my previous machine that I am on now, I didn’t remember doing anything special to, and all my editing programs run fine, and all video pertaining to the machine runs fine. I thought that these MainConcept files came on Vegas. Also, I noticed that MainConcept has a DV codec file that according to them, makes rendering faster. Is that also on Vegas installation disk?
Thanks Mike for your help, or anyone else that throw in their two cents. I have a wedding coming up, and need the new machine running in tip top shape for the editing.

You’re still missing a crucial point in this.
The codec you need is an MJPEG codec which you don’t have installed on your computer.
I know this is the case because I went through the exact same codec issue two years ago and ended up buying one.
As I said though, just download and install the trial version.
There’s no need to buy it unless you want to.
I’ve been told (DSE/Spot??) that this will allow you to play back a file that’s been encoded with this particular codec.

Mike is correct ….. you REALLY do need a MJPEG codec to be installed on your system and Vegas 6 did not include a MJPEG codec.

However, if you were on-the-fence about upgrading to Vegas Pro 8 then you’ll be happy to know that a MJPEG codec is now included.

    Mike,
I downloaded that file from MainConcepts website. They say there will be a watermark, but don’t see one on the videos. I don’t understand why I didn’t have the same problem with the older machine? I still have a problem with not being able to play dvd’s, and the funky flourencent colored screen on some of my training dvd’s and MSNBC’s news videos. I show that I have mcdspmeg.ax files on the computer , so why wouldn’t they be working? And how long does that demo version work?

The demo version only puts the watermark on when you RENDER to that format. For reading, it works fine without the watermark.

It did work on the avi file. I got to thinking, I wonder whether Nero has a decoder in their program, because I have that on the older computer. So, I installed Nero 6.6 onto the new computer, and I can play dvds now. BUT, for some reason I cannot play wmv files. I used Vegas to render that avi file to wmv, and it is just like MSNBC news clips, all funky looking (like reversed flourecent colors). And even now when I use the XP Codec Utility Checker, it shows the Nero video decoder, and still says even it is not compatable with WMP. Did you guys have to buy MainConcept Jmpeg file, or are you using something else. How long is the trial version for? I unistalled the demo version, to see if it is picked up by Nero, and it is. Don’t understand what is going on, but just have to figure out what’s up with the WMV file playback stituation.
I appreciate all your help,—-believe me!!!
