.avi import to PPCS3, movie length cut off
Posted by Bruce Liddil on December 11, 2007 at 9:11 pmHi,
I’ve just upgraded to Premiere Pro CS3(Windows).
I have an .avi file that is roughly 36 minutes long. When I import it into PPCS3, I only see the first 31 seconds. This same clip imported fine in PP 1.5.
When I open a project with this .avi in it, created in 1.5, using the 1.5 application, I see the whole 36 minutes. When I open the SAME project (created in 1.5) using CS3, the whole clip shows in the sequence, but is greyed out after 31 seconds.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Thanks,
Bruce

December 12, 2007 at 3:37 pmWMV3, better known as Windows Media Video 9 codec.
It is a screen capture movie created with My Screen Recorder.
It imports fine into Premiere Pro 1.5. The problem only happens when importing into Premiere Pro CS3. We purchased several licenses of CS3 (can’t get 1.5 anymore) for this purpose, so I’ve got to figure out how to make this work with CS3.Thanks,
Bruce

December 12, 2007 at 6:34 pmTry 2 things;
1. Change the file extension to .wmv
2. Failing that, I would try to re-index the file. Windows Media Encoder 9 is free from MS. It includes 4 utilities, one is File Editor. Open your video in the Windows Media File Editor and choose “Save as and Index”. -

I changed the extension to .wmv.
When I tried to import it, PPCS3 said it was an invalid file type. Changed the extension back to .avi and PPCS3 imported it, but again, cut off most of the length.
Tried opening it in Windows Media File Editor. It said it was an invalid file type.
Thanks,
Bruce

December 13, 2007 at 11:50 amDownload a free app called GSpot and open your video in that. It will analyze the properties of the clip. What are the video properties?

December 14, 2007 at 11:58 amI dont see any clues, except VC-1. I think requires Windows Media Player 11 to install the decompressor. Is you experience with this file and 1.5 and CS3 on the same PC? How about another similar file?

When I open a project with this .avi in it, created in 1.5, using the 1.5 application, I see the whole 36 minutes. When I open the SAME project (created in 1.5) using CS3, the whole clip shows in the sequence, but is greyed out after 31 seconds.
Another clip with identical properties and of similar length behaves the same way.
Premiere Pro 1.5 handles the clips fine on 2 very different PCs.
Premiere Pro CS3 cuts the clips off exactly the way on both PCs.Thanks,
Bruce
