Audio Sync issue with CS3, but not CS2
Posted by Richard Eary on September 25, 2007 at 1:52 pmI am having audio sync issues with Premiere CS3, but no issues with Premiere 2. The audio is about 4 seconds behind the video. My specs are below. I think it is a bug, but I would be thankful for any help I can get. Many projects to edit…
HDV Preset – Captured within application from Sony Z1U
Sound Blaster Au. 2 and Intensity Pro (deckline) card
Supermicro dual xeon 3.4, 4 gigs, 2 terabytes, ati 1950 pcieI do not believe there is an sync issue with CS3 when using the Blackmagic codecs. Not using the Blackmagic codecs because capturing aborts when using motion jpeg preset. Aborts after about 1 minute or 2. Unrelated issue.
The settings match the sound confugiration in CS3 as in CS2. Attempted using Deckline compared to Sound Blaster. Premiere Sound selected.

September 25, 2007 at 5:25 pmYou have to clarify a few things, Where is the delay? when you are playing internally using Ppro monitors, or externally going through the intensity, if externally, where are you monitoring the sound? on the external device or using computer sound while playing back the video externally through the Intensity, also is it component or HDMI?

September 26, 2007 at 12:55 amI have done a complete test between CS2 and CS3 using a clapper and capturing at different presets. There is actually about a second or two delay with CS3.
The delay would be in the audio not be in sync with the video. The delay happens playing either on the internal ppro monitor or on the intensity. The delay is about the same. I tested audio output on both cards, the Sound Blaster and Intensity. Both cards had the delay. I also tested the audio on a HDMI monitor using the Intesity card (audio send thru HDMI cable). The analog audio was being sent directly to the speakers (thru a mixer).
Everything worked perfectly using CS2. This includes audio being sent HDMI or thru the analog mixer.
Video is being sent to a HDMI and Component monitor on the Intensity card. Presets were also used that do not use the Intesity card. Both NTSC and HDV presets were tested.

September 26, 2007 at 5:28 amLast time I checked the Intensity site there was no remarks saying it supported CS3 only Ppro 2.

September 26, 2007 at 11:32 amThe Intensity Pro does now support CS3. Al though, the install process can be a pain because the presets had to be copied to the proper directories manually. The only issue I have with the Intensity Pro is that the sources for multicam editing are blank. It is a bug that has not been resolved.
I don’t believe this has anything do with the Intensity Pro card because I still have the same audio delay (out of sync by a few seconds) when using presets that came with Premiere (non-Blackmagic presets).

September 26, 2007 at 12:43 pmCapturing HDV through firewire using Premiere Pro CS3 is pretty much broken.
I tried capturing over 20 tapes and not a single clip was usable due to audio synch problems and/or multi-cam synch problems. Some of the clips would look fine as far as audio synch, but those same clips wouldn’t synch properly with other clips with multi-cam.
Furthermore, projects would take forever to load (more so than usual) and CS3 stability was bad (more so than usual) if I had a CS3-captured HDV clip in any project.
Clips from the same tapes captured in PPro 2.0 or Vegas worked just fine in CS3. Other people reported that HDVSplit worked fine as well.
Use another program to capture the clips. If you capture your HDV with CS3, you are asking for problems…

September 26, 2007 at 1:51 pmI believe there is more to the picture. Yes, capturing HDV through firewire using CS3 caused synch issues, but I still had sync issues capturing analog through Intensity Pro.
I am currently recapturing my tapes in CS2. That version of Premiere seems to work much better than CS3.

September 26, 2007 at 2:10 pmI hadn’t realized you were capturing analog through the Intensity. I thought you were just monitoring through it.
I’ve captured the same tapes analog through a Xena LH and HD-SDI going through an HD-Connect LE, but with Aja’s Machina capture program, not Premiere Pro’s.
That uncompressed HD footage all worked fine in CS3. I had to turn to another NLE for my HDV workflows, because I encountered too many bugs in CS3. Premiere Pro 2.0 didn’t have any of these problems, it worked pretty good.

September 26, 2007 at 4:03 pmAdobe Support said that the Blackmagic drivers may be causing the problem even if I am not using a Blackmagic preset. I am going to un-install the drivers and see if the problem still exist. Al though, Blackmagic has not heard of any issues.
How much drive space is enough when working with uncompressed footage? I estimated I would need 10 terabytes. 500 gigs per tape.

September 27, 2007 at 12:49 pmThat’s about right, give or take depending on whether you go 8bit or 10bit. 450gig for 8bit per hour and just under 600gig for 10bit per hour.
Aja has a great data rate calculator and system test utility for free download on their web site.

September 27, 2007 at 1:06 pmIt sounds like HD is pushing the limits of technology. Not long ago a terabyte wasn’t a common word.
Is it possible that the videos are not being captured correctly? For example, video with out of sync audio plays exactly the same in Liquid. So this isn’t an issue where it plays incorrectly. Looks more like an issue where it captures incorrectly.
