ATI Radeon X1900 XT Graphics work in dual G5 2.7 for color?
Posted by Lee on May 25, 2007 at 9:45 amHi
I just ordered my FCP 2 upgrade but I’m confused on the graphics card.
It is saying on the apple website that this is recommended ATI Radeon X1900 XT ) but only in a Mac Pro?This is what it say on the apple website
Based on the PCI Express architecture, the ATI Radeon X1900 XT fits into the double-wide slot on your Mac Pro or a standard plus one adjacent standard PCI Express slot. The upgrade kit also includes a DVI to VGA connector for easy connection to VGA-based displays.
System Requirements
Mac Pro with available double-wide PCI Express slot or two standard slots
The dual 2.7 ghz has pci express so will this work?
Thanks
Paul

May 25, 2007 at 9:52 amYep, it should. But I don’t believe you have the double wide slot on your machine, so the card will block the next slot over, leaving you with three total PCIe slots available for use.
The Mac Pros actually allocate for this by providing a double wide space for these new graphics cards so you still get all four slots.

May 25, 2007 at 10:45 amI have the same machine and COlor loads and works fine with the Graphics card installed.
You should read through the requirements carefully as it does state that all GFX cards fromt he Dual 2.5 G5’s on up will work.

May 25, 2007 at 2:44 pmI have a Dual 2.7 and I don’t think I have PCI-Express. Can you double check? I thought the PCI-Express options were later in the models.

May 25, 2007 at 2:50 pm(cont.) I believe that the Dual 2.7 G5 only has PCI-X and I do not think that the card you are asking about will work in this computer. The best card I have found is the ATI Radeon X800.

There are dual 2.7gb G5s with PCIx slots and quad 2.7 G5s with PCIe slots.

This is true IF you have one of the versions that has PCI-X as my secondary system. ATI does make an ATI X1900 GT for this computer, which is the same card but for the PCI-X buss. Right now, mine has an X800 but I am looking at the option of going with the X1900 GT card.
Apple has this card for $349.

May 25, 2007 at 6:39 pmI’m only finding this card with PCI-Express options. Where do you see PCI-X? And I don’t believe Apple made a Quad 2.7, the Quad was 2.5 and then 3.0, with the PCI-Express options. I guess I am maxed out for video card speed until I upgrade computer.
