    Nice and cheap too. 🙂

The monitor costs more than the MacPro!

    That’s not entirely unprecedented.

Back in 2004 the 30″ ACD cost $3,299. At or above the base PowerMacG4 of the time, I think.

[Glenn Grant] “I guess we won’t be seeing a 4K monitor from Apple along side the new Mac Pro.”

So, here’s something odd. One of the photos of that display in the store showed it next to something that looked exactly like the current generation Time Capsule… in much the same way one would expect to see a display photographed next to a desktop computer. Maybe it was just there for scale or something… but there has also been speculation about a next-generation Mac mini with that form factor.

Why am I talking in past tense? Well, just to make things even more intriguing, the listing for the display now seems to have been pulled.

Did Apple just accidentally spill the beans on a next-generation 4K-capable Mac mini?

The Apple Cinema HD 23” display was originally $3,499 according to Mactracker. I paid less than that if memory serves me but I remember the monitor cost $300 more than the outfitted PowerMac G5 Dual 2 GHz I bought with it. That monitor is still my secondary display off my iMac.

Interesting theory. I think the fact that they have taken the monitors off the site means we can expect Mac Pros This Tuesday.

Next Tuesday the 17th would be nice because that’s my birthday. It would be like Tim Cook and God got together to say “We love you Glenn”

Interesting that the Sharp display is gone from the Apple Store so soon after appearing there.

I have to think that Apple will be updating their own displays even pre 4K. The current Thunderbolt display has Firewire 800 and USB2. I expect that will be updated to Thunderbolt 2 and USB3 (by to Firewire).

It’s interesting that the Sharp display went away so quickly though. Perhaps they decided they didn’t want to sell a competing monitor as a new (not necessarily 4k) Apple Display will be coming out with the MacPro.

I hope that’s the case. As you’ve pointed out, the current Thunderbolt display is really long in the tooth. Those port upgrades are especially essential for new retina laptop users who need to use the monitor as a dock. That’s what I’m waiting on. 4K would be nice but Thunderbolt 2 and USB3 are way more important.

I can’t see how Apple selling any 3rd party 4K display is anything other than a sign that their own 4KACD isn’t ready yet.

Apple doesn’t sell any other displays at the standard resolution- so it’s definitely not typical for them to sell competing products in that category.

But it seems they are no longer selling the Sharp display as far as I can tell. It seems it was pulled from the store rather quickly.

So either than means the 4K is ready or, at least, they’ll have a new ACD ready to go shortly…. possibly followed by a 4K display.

Why do you think the Sharp 4K was pulled so quickly after being listed?

It was noticed on the Apple Store and pulled on pretty much the same day- I don’t think anyone was actually able to order it.

I think it was posted prematurely, and pulled when they realized it.
