Anyone know of a large HD that supports both Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3?

I have a feeling there are no large HDs with Thunderbolt… The LaCie d2 3TB Thunderbolt has USB3, but the 5big series only has Thunderbolt.

Can you use a Thunderbird2 drive on the Mac Pro and connect the other computer via network, or are the two computers in different places or not on at the same time?

Hmm. That looks promising. Thunderbolt 2 in to Belkin. USB 3 out to to Cal Digit USB 3 card in the old Mac Pro.

Networking is another option I suppose. Small shop. Three unnetworked machines. Recommendations for simple/easy way to network/share media drives without getting in fibre channel, etc?

It looks like modern macs have gigabit ethernet cards, so you should be able to share a drive without bottlenecks.

I wish I could find the same thing, but less expensive. Although they haven’t “officially” stated it’s in the works, I’m hoping for a new OWC Voyager type drive dock to come out with ThunderBolt (1 or 2). These days, a single drive is plenty good and fast for me for backup and I edit with built-in drives.

In theory, if and when OWC comes out with a new drive dock, it should include both USB3 and ThunderBolt 1 or 2. But, I’m only guessing and hoping.

I kinda wonder if all this is going to matter much in a few years.

The trend to larger SSD drives on a host machine leads me to think that we’re not too far from a simple two tiered system.

Most editors (and editing software) will expect big solid state system drives that can pool and work with everything from the OS to the App AND it’s “local content library” pretty much instantly. External drives (local or networked, doesn’t matter) will be relegated into the roll of “feeders” into that system.

And as such, their speed – either internally or via network connection – won’t be a very important factor.

Think about that in conjunction with the FCP-X content reference architecture that lets you edit immediately with low rez thumbnail video files and easily swaps those out with links to the more robust media files as they’re on-line.

Even the cheap backup Seagate drives I buy at Costco are just bit buckets that have removable “snap on” interface modules. I can snap in USB-3, Firewire 800, and likely soon, a Thunderbolt i/o module and I suspect that will be plenty fast to serve the files the software needs onto the SSD as needed for actual editing.

We’re headed for a whole new era here.
