I’m planning on doing a light writing promo for a client using the methods described in Aharon’s tutorial. What I’d like to do is shoot my co-worker outside at night doing his best impression of “writing” in the air and then compositing the effect on top of it. Could anyone elaborate or offer a bit of advice as to the best way to get the appropriate speed/motion effect for the person so that it looks like he is actually writing with the light?

    Thanks again!

that is truly something no one can answer but you. Whatever feels right
is what you go with. Sorry, but without more detail its hard to advise..

There are many ways to go about this, i havent seen the tutorial you mentioned but the way id go about getting the most accurate and realistic result is by first off making sure you can get a good track from his hand while shooting, this will give you the most natural look and you dont have to worry about the speed or trying to eyeball position. Id just track his hand to a null object use particular for the writting light (i know there are hundreds of tuts out there on how to do that) and attach the point emitter to the null (using the expressions pickwhip). maybe give it a small hint of velocity from motion.
