Adjusting the video so that it can fit the Youtube screen?
Posted by Natasha Wolfe on March 25, 2011 at 5:11 pmI’m using Sony Vegas 9.
I’m assuming you go to Project, Properties, and then Video… only there are a bunch of different possible formats. I’m not sure which one will fit Youtube’s widescreen screen.
I have uploaded videos onto Youtube in the past and I get black bars on the sides, and on the top and bottom (the video was already widescreen, so as you can probably guess, the video was that much smaller… I don’t care if it’s widescreen, I just don’t want to have unneccessary bars all around the video.) Can someone please tell me which ratio to put it at?
Thank-you!Julija Yallar replied 8 years, 6 months ago 6 Members · 16 Replies -

March 25, 2011 at 5:58 pmLeave your video in it’s original size. Don’t change the aspect ratio.
If you add “letter boxing” (black bars on top and bottom) to 16:9 video (to make the video fit on a 4:3 display) then upload it to YouTube, YouTube will add “pillar boxes” (black bars on the sides) to make your video (with the letter boxing you added) fit in it’s wide screen player. So, don’t add letter-boxing to wide screen video that is destined for YouTube.
YouTube help, Optimizing your video upload. See “aspect ratio” section-

What is the resolution of your video?
If it’s SD widescreen use: NTSC DV Widescreen (720×480, 29.970 fps).
If it’s HD widescreen use: HDV 720-30p (1280×720, 29.970 fps). Also what render template are you using?

March 25, 2011 at 11:05 pmMy video is originally widescreen as it is, which makes the bars around it on Youtube even worse because it’s so small.
My render template is set to 6 Mbps HD 720-30 p Video… I wasn’t sure what else to set it to…
I tried both SD and HD and neither one works on Youtube.

March 26, 2011 at 9:49 amYoutube requires 16:9, so you should crop your clips in Pan/Crop window.
Try Video4YouTube plug-in (free).
It can automatically render and upload your project to Youtube. Before using it, you should select the project template that corresponds to your source media. Plug-in determines the relevant rendering parameters (resolution, frame rate etc.) based on the project settings. To do this, go to File > Properties. Click the Match Media Settings button (with the folder icon) in the upper-right corner of the Project Properties window. Navigate to one of your source video files and click Open. This selects the appropriate template for you.
Then go to Tools > Extensions > Video4Youtube
Best regards.

March 26, 2011 at 7:00 pmI downloaded it, but when I look in Tools, I don’t see Extensions…I correctly saved the plug-in to a folder on my computer, and opened it up from there to download it. It said that it was finished, and that if I opened up Sony Vegas, it would be there under Tools>Extensions but I don’t see it…help!

March 26, 2011 at 11:50 pmAfter you download the file (Video4YouTube_Setup_1.0.exe, correct?), you have to double-click it and follow the prompts to install it.
Then it will show up where it’s supposed to. -

March 27, 2011 at 4:26 amI have already done that. It said that it was now installed, and that I could find it under Tools>Extensions… I can’t even find Extensions, let alone Video4Youtube! It sounds like a great application to have… I just desperately wish that it would work!
