I made a 5.1, 6-channel surround sound file in Adobe Audition, and imported it into Premiere Pro. When I play it back, however, all forward-backward movement of sounds away from the center is just the volume fading down, but left-right movement of sounds is perfect. So basically, I’ve lost front and rear speakers, and it’s working like stereo sound.

I’ve gone through all the audio hardware setup stuff I need to, and I know for a fact that my soundcard DOES support 5.1, and I have the speakers for it. But it’s still not working.

I’m eventually putting this movie with the 5.1 audio onto DVD, so am I right in putting the 5.1 file into Premiere? Can it export a movie with 5.1 audio? Can it pass it through without re-encoding? Or should I just put it in Adobe Encore, separate from the video, straight from Audition?

The file format can be one of three types: 1. 5.1 6-channel Windows Media Pro Audio 6 file, 2. 6-channel .wav file, or 3. 6 separate mono .wav files, one for each channel.

Should I put it in AC3 format? How would I do that? Are there any free AC3 encoders out on the internet? If so, which ones are the good ones? Would these be usable straight from Audition, or would I have to convert one of the previously listed file types to AC3 using a standalone converter?

The best way IMHO is to import 6 mono WAV files into PP, with a 5.1 master track and use the Minnetonka Surcode plug-in to output to 5.1 AC3.

Yes, I know there are plugins that do this very well… unfortunately, I am not rich, and I cannot afford $1,000 plugins, hence why I said I needed a FREE AC3 encoder.

No need to spend $ 1.000, the SurCode plug-in is $ 299. If that is too much, you could try BeSweet, but it has several compatability problems and some quality problems as well. You have to pay if you want quality. If you can’t pay, choose an alternative route.
