4:3 to 16:9 aspect change
Greetings,
I’m after a spot of advice with an advert I’m making for English TV.
I’ll be doing an edit of a load of 4:3 footage but delivering in 16:9 once it’s done.
So what I’m doing at the moment is sorting the edit and VFX out in FCP and then AE. So I’m left with a D1 PAL 4:3 comp in AE that needs to be converted to 16:9.
So then I’ll precomp it to another D1 4:3 comp and put letterbox black bars top and bottom, then adjust the shots so they sit right in their new space.
THEN I’ll precomp again and stretch it vertically until the bars disappear, effectively giving me a full height 16:9 picture that can then be stretched out to anamorphic once its back in FCP and played to tape.
Is this an ass-backwards way of going about this? I’m guessing it is. Anyway, the problem comes when I get to the final stage in AE. When stretching the image up I’m not sure what kind of comp I should be in to get the right pixel dimensions when I finally render.
Should it be another D1 PAL or a D1 PAL Widescreen? Or a square pixels widescreen? My logos appear to be distorted at the moment whatever approach I try…

Since you want an anamorphic 16:9 for FCP, then it’s PALD1/DV Widescreen.
But before you do that, it may be worth the while to view it in a 16:9 square pixel comp, PAL D1/DV Widescreen Square Pixel to ensure that things look right.
