  • 4:3 and 16:9 footage in 3:2 sequence to PAL Please Take Me step By Step

Posted by Robin Rudy on April 28, 2008 at 4:25 am

    Greetings.

I have searched the forums and am still coming up short. Thank you in advance for any help you may have!

    Question:

What is the workflow from Final Cut to Compressor to DVDSP– to create a PAL DVD with an edit created in a DV NTSC 3:2 sequence which is using both 16:9 and 4:3 footage?

    Background:

Working with 16:9 and 4:3 footage (4:3 was digitized as widescreen) in a DV Ntsc 3:2 sequence. Anamorphic footage has been adjusted in the timeline — distort- aspect ratio -33.33. Both 16:9 and 4:3 clips are on one track.

This 1 min video needs to meet the following requirements:

    1. PAL
    2. 16:9

when I create a new sequence with the following settings:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/984247#984247

frame size should be CCIR 601 / DV PAL (5:4)
the pixel aspect ratio should be PAL – CCIR 601 (720×576)
    editing time base 25
compresor (for quicktime video settings) DV-NTSC –
(– should it be set at PROGRESSIVE and not interlaced?)

and then copy and paste the edit completed in a dv ntc 3:2 sequence into this new sequence with PAL settings, in the canvas I see a wide black screen and the edit appears as a small box within the canvas (does not fill entire canvas).

    Thank you.

Dont copy and paste. Drag the NTSC sequence on top of the PAL sequence.

Thanks, ok, so I would just go ahead and nest the 3:2 sequence into a newly created pal sequence.

Additionally, do I need to have anamorphic and 4:3 footage on 2 separate tracks so they are encoded separately when sending to compressor?

With the tests I have done thus far, the 16:9 and 4:3 footage have different letterboxing ratios in the compressor preview; I have compensated for this via cropping in the inspector in compressor.

And is it possible to simply export from a dv ntsc timeline with 4:3 and 16: 9 footage in a 3:2 sequence into compressor and select the compressor advanced format conversion option, changing/ reencoding in compressor from dv ntsc to pal?

    Once in compressor:

should I create an mpeg 2 or a quicktime?
should I be using DV PAL or PAL Anamorphic?

    as an mpeg2
    video format: pal
    aspect ratio 16:9
    quality 2 pass vbr

and if exporting as a quicktime, should video be interlaced or progressive?

I’ve also researched that the frame controls should be changed :
    custom
    resize filter: best
    output felds: same
    deinterlace: better
    rate conversion: better

Thanks for any help. I truly appreciate it!

Sorry but I don’t think my suggestion will work. I think that FC won’t lets you to set a sequence inside another sequence with different time-base.
Why don’t just send your NTSC sequence to Compressor? > Other workflows> Advanced Format Conversion> DV PAL 16×9

    Hi Robin,
You were posting me while I was posting you.
    The easiest workflow:
    – Forget about you want to make a PAL movie and make the best NTSC master you can.
    – Convert your NTSC movie to PAL. You can use Compressor, Nattress Standar Converter or MPGStreamclip. But think that if you use Compressor and set the parameters to CUSTOM , compressor can take ages to make the conversion.
    – Send your PAL movie to Compressor to make aPAL MPG2.

Hi, ok, thanks… for some reason I am confused, will check on the thread in the am…

ok so i am using compressor twice?
once from the timeline in fcp via compressor make a quicktime, this is converting the master ntsc into a pal qt?

then import this new pal qt into compressor again to make m2v?

isn’t is possible to import the new pal qt made via compressor into dvd studio pro?

    thanks again.

Once you have your PAL.mov, you can use Compressor to make the .mv2 and the audio, or import directly the .mov to DVDSTP. DVDSTP will make the transcoding. I personally prefer Compressor. The two applications work quite well, so think that the quality of the final DVD will depends mostly of the quality of your PAL master. So try to get the best possible.

Thanks. I made the qt in compressor and then brought it into dvdsp. Tried to burn, and DVD will not burn — error “bit rate too high.”

Do you have any suggestions– should i just do a 1 pass vbr when making the quicktime to lower the bit rate? is this how I would lower the bit rate?

or should I bring the QT I made into compressor to create the m2v?- would this affect the bit rate?

Thanks again for any help, I am hopeful my questions are clear.

What Preset or data-rate have you set? What kind of audio?
You shouldn’t have problems with “Best Quality 90 minutes”. You can even set the audio as .aiff instead of Dolby Digital to get better quality.
One or two passes doesn’t change the final data-rate of your MPGs.

    Rafael thanks.

I’m sorry if this sounds like an obvious Question but:

I am exporting via fcp to compresor making a quicktime and then bringing this into dvd sp, right? DVD sp will convert thie quicktime into an m2v, and then burn is this correct?

    Thanks so much.

Yes. You can import the .mov directly to DVDSTP, or you can use again Compressor to do the MPG2 and the audio. Then bring those to DVDSTP.
