3rd party monitoring – not quite there yet!
Posted by Justin Ferar on May 7, 2012 at 6:34 pmJust installed 6.0 (with high hopes!) and was dissapointed to see a very discernible latency issue with Adobe transmit and Black Magic Intensity Pro.
Basically the monitor is a few frames behind no matter the codec (5d DSLR, P2 AVC-intra, etc).
Wondering about AJA or other BM users – any latency issues?

May 7, 2012 at 7:28 pmQuestion – how are you determining latency?
1) Looking at computer screen and external monitor at same time
2) Lip sync doesn’t match on external display
I ask because HDMI monitors can introduce a bit of lag with internal processing. Heck, I can have 2 TVs at home tuned to the same channel in different rooms and have a second or two of difference between them, big echo.
If audio is the issue, you should have your audio monitors connected to the display to ensure sync. I use Matrox MXO2 with HDMI to LED display, and connect my speakers to the audio out on rear of display.
If you’re just saying the two displays are a little off from one another…I personally watch one or the other, I wouldn’t care if they match perfectly, not sure how that’s a big issue

May 7, 2012 at 7:52 pmAJA has not “officially” released their CS6 drivers. Unless any beta testers want to chime in, it is a wait and see till they release them.

May 7, 2012 at 8:17 pmI think I can chime in. I have the AJA Kona 3, and CS6 beta, and playback is a LOT better than in CS5.5. Not quite frame accurate, I have a 2-3 frame lag. But the drivers are still in beta…so…

May 7, 2012 at 8:31 pmThanks for the reply Jeff,
I know it’s off because I’ve been using the same BM card with FCP for years.
Also, there is no latency issue with 5.5.

May 7, 2012 at 8:41 pmJust to clarify, monitoring was definitely very flakey in 5.5 with my setup but at least it was NOT latent.
I would also add that so far scabbing with 6.0 is vastly improved with 5d DSLR footage – dare I say “snappy” which is pretty much revolutionary though I’m still not sure if I wan’t to grade h264 – but it’s nice to have the option.
While I’m at it I would also like to thank the Adobe gods for a making audio scrub a keyboard short cut which was just down right emabarassing not to have earlier.

May 7, 2012 at 8:57 pmWith CS 5.5, you either had external monitoring…or the Mercury Playback Engine. You couldn’t have both. CS6 and TRANSMIT allows you to have both. Baby steps…it’s getting there.
And know that third party card support is provided by the third parties themselves. Adobe isn’t responsible with getting the BMD cards or AJA cards or Matrox cards to work. That is up to the card makers to get them to work. Which is why support for one card is better, or comes sooner, than another.

May 7, 2012 at 9:50 pmDing dong! Im chiming in as well. I get about a 1 frame difference between the Program Monitor and the Kona 3 hooked up to the external engineering monitor. I listen to Kona 3 audio out and things are cool.
Since I either watch one image or the other (as opposed to watching one with the left eye and the other with the right eye :P) I am very happy with Transmit and the added performance I get from stable , CUDA sequence playback.Tom Daigon

May 8, 2012 at 12:30 am“Scabbing” is not an editorial term that I am aware of. I meant scrubbing. But scabbing sounds cool. Stung by Apple autocorrect again!
