2nd Monitor Only Displays 540 Scanlines
This one seems to have everyone at Adobe flustered:
Our quad-core editing workstation has an nVidia 8800GTS with 640MB RAM.
The primary monitor is a HP LP3065 (native res: 2560×1600)
The secondary is a Vizio GV47LF (native res 1920×1080)We have Premiere Pro CS3 configured on HDV projects to send video out the second monitor. It works reasonably well except for one thing: jaggies everywhere. With sharply-focused high contrast scenes that have straight edges, like fences, building, or even eyeglass rims, there is very distracting jaggies. A careful inspection revealed that every scanline is doubled–effectively only 540 scanlines in the 1080p signal being sent to the 2nd monitor.
The primary monitor isn’t experiencing this problem. It’s getting the full resolution of the HDV footage and looks like film, lacking any digital artifacts based on resolution or aliasing.
The nVidia control panel has been carefully studied for any adjustments that may be limiting monitor #2. Color is set to 32-bit, resolution is 1920×1080, progressive, quality set to maximum. The monitor status shows it’s receiving a 1080p synch signal. But Premiere is only sending 540 scanlines to it and it looks really bad. Noise in indoor HDV footage is exaggerated by the half vertical resolution, effectively doubling the size of noise pixels. Anything with an edge looks like a sawtooth instead of a smooth edge.
It’s so bad that twice in as many weeks, two clients have asked if this was what their video was going to look like, with stair-stepping on edges. I’ve had to explain in layman’s terms that this was a problem with our display and not the final product they will be receiving. But there’s got to be a way to fix this.
How many of you are using Premiere in a dual monitor situation where the second monitor is very large for a group of clients to preview the project and of those, how many are having problems with half vertical resolution being sent to the 2nd monitor? Have you found a solution to allow full 1080 line output? If so, what was it?

Have you checked your video quality in your playback settings? These would be available from the control cluster on the bottom of the program monitor panel…the button that looks like three balls in a pile.
If you click on that, a context menu will come up and near the bottom, you’ll see “highest quality, draft quality, and automatic quality”.
If “draft” or “automatic” is checked, PPro may be putting that external monitor into draft mode to preserve system resources. You should try to set that for “highest quality” and see if the display resources in your machine can handle it and still be responsive enough to edit (you didn’t say what you graphics card was…)

How are you sending the video to the monitor? via component or DVI? On a Vizio my 8600 video card only supports 1080i via a component connection. I had to upgrade to a HDMI->DVI cable to get 1080p.

Yes, video quality on the program monitor is set to high. If I set it to Draft, it looks like a YouTube video on the 47″ monitor.

I’m using a DVI > HDMI cable and driving the monitor at 1080P.
I can’t understand why I’m getting “540P” on the monitor because of this.Take care,

Adobe probably asked, but what version drivers are you running for the GeForce card?
I know at least in terms of the QuadroFX boards, the actual certified driver is quite a way back from the latest version…

Are you running Vista? or XP?, If XP, 8xxx cards, there are current updates to DirectX 9c which fix some problems with the directX 9 with Direct3d10 components that came with the 8xxx cards driver CD and got loaded during driver installation

Have you tried the viz on the primary port? If so how does it look? Also is it possible you are running refresh rates on the 8800 that could be affecting the overall performance of the viz?
