I’m having an issue with Cinema4D. I got a new 27″ iMac, decked out with the i7 processor, 8Gb of RAM. The machine came with Snow Leopard, which I understand still has a few “flakey bits” in it – I’m much more confident and comfortable working in Leopard, but it is what it is.

The issue I am having is that the machine will Kernel panic sometimes when I am editing in Cinema4D. It’s a reproducable error, but it doesn’t happen 100%. But one time out of ten, when you click on an object in the viewport to select it, bam – kernel panic.

I’ve found that I can completely eliminate this problem by switching C4D’s interface into software mode. This leads me to believe the problem is either in Apple’s video driver, or that Cinema4D represents some kind of “edge case” in the way it handles OpenGL. Nothing else on the machine causes this same problem – I’ve run 3D games and other 3D apps and no kernel panics. C4D 11.5 is the only program I have on the machine that causes the problem.

Has anyone else with a similar setup found the same problem? Every time it happened I submitted the crash report that came up after I rebooted – I presume this goes to both Apple and Maxon. I keep looking in C4D’s software update or in Apple Software Update for a patch that might address this issue, but so far, nothing.

I’ve tinkered with the various OpenGL settings. C4D reports that the machine is capable of “enhanced OpenGL” but that just leads to a very messed up looking display. Turning all openGL features off doesn’t make the machine any more stable. Software mode is rock solid – I’ve had the same scene file loaded for days while I tweak things and never a hiccup.

Kind of bummed out that I can’t really use this machine to it’s fullest – it renders like a demon, but my Macbook has a faster modelling interface because at least on THAT machine I can use OpenGL in the viewport without fear that the whole machine will drop out from under me.

Followup on this – If I run Cinema 4D in 32 bit mode, I can use OpenGL viewports, and even full Extended OpenGL without issue. My guess is, ATI’s video driver isn’t quite 64bit ready.

I have the same problem – kernel panic (gray screen) vith Snow Leopard and c4d R11.5. My machine is older iMac 24 (aluminium), 2,4 GHz with ATI HD2600.
Interesting is, that this problem emerged after upgrading OS X from 10.6 to 10.6.1. or 10.6.2 (not sure). Under original 10.6 it was, if I can remember, without problems.

Now I’m trying running cinema under 32 bit mode – Iĺl write here if this solves this annoying problem.

So bad news – Cinema causes kernel panic also in 32-bit mode 🙁

FYI – having similar kernel panics as well

    Cinema 4D 11.5
    Snow Leopard 10.6.2
    Mac Pro 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad
    8GB RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 4870

Any resolution or additional thoughts on this?

This is bad – I have no solution yet. Interestingly, there are only few mention of this problem on internet, so I think that’s not a wide-spread problem.

I have the same kernel panic with Cinema 4D 11.5 that is being described here.

My system is a MacPro early 2008 2.8ghz quad with an ATI HD3870

This is the only program I’ve used that has caused a panic. Last time it happened I sent the error report to Maxon, have not heard back yet.

same here MacPro 2008 ATI HD4870. only with C4D.

This also is the only application that causes a kernel panic – I’ve also noticed it since upgrades to 10.6. I’m hoping that the temporary solution of downgrading the real-time interaction to software rendering from OpenGL rendering will work – but I really hope there is a real solution soon, and I wish Maxon would at least reply to what’s going on.

    Hi

I have C4D running on a 27 i7 and OpenGL without any problems. C4D runs in 64 bits.

Maybe the latest FW update fixes those problems?

Im having a similar issue with A mac Pro,30″ Display,Snow leopard running CD4 11.5. But im having Kernel Panics during rendering? it happens about 5 times out of ten when rendering with Global illumination and or Ambient Occlusion. this is the first ive heard about a similar problems. Mac havnt been very helpful and Maxon isnt aware of any issues?

Im tearing my hair out! I have taken It back for several services but has always passed hardware tests…My old mac pro ran the same software and had no problems. the only difference with my new system is a time machine back up using a 2TB External Lacie drive and a 2nd samsung monitor.

I recently fixed a faulty memomy card and upped the ram to 8gb but had another crash today. im running out of ideas?

    Does anyone have any thoughts?
