April 7, 2010 at 1:36 pmWell, it’s somewhat calming to see that I am not alone with this issue. Since switching the program to 32 bit mode, I’m still having the occasional kernel panic. Mostly now it appears to be a GUI issue – dragging and dropping materials on objects (either in the viewport or in the object list) or sometimes the act of creating a new material. However, I have not had kernel panics with rendering since I’m pretty much exclusively using third party “unbiased” rendering packages – I’ve been dabbling with both LuxRender and Indigo, and no issues there at all. Yes, this is likely Maxon’s fault for doing “something” that is upsetting the system, but its also Apple’s fault for letting such an important app bring the whole system down. Hope they fix whatever the issue is, soon. Cinema 4D used to be rock, but now I feel like I can’t trust the package anymore.
One thing I have not tried is going back to an older version of C4D. Maybe I’ll give that a whirl this weekend…

April 7, 2010 at 2:20 pmIt appears that since updating to OSX 10.6.3 the problem is fixed and I can now run C4D in 64bit mode without crashing.
I corresponded with a C4D developer and the problem was with either OSX or the ATI driver according to the crash reports. But again, it seems to be fixed with 10.6.3
