23″ ACD – to repair or not to repair?
Greetings Cows.
Just got the bad news that my 2-year-old Cinema Display has a fried board inside. (I was hoping it was just a bad power supply…) It’s a $585 flat fee to have Apple fix it. No other repair options, according to my local dealer.
So – worth it? Shane, you like the Dell monitors, correct? Are the Cow-approved models significantly cheaper? Would they work if I ever got an MXO, or are the LUT’s only good for the Cinema Displays? Am I better off biting the bullet & repairing this one? It’s still $900 for a new one…hard to justify in a down economy.
All thoughts welcome.

Dump it and get a Dell 2408? Or are they up to 2409? You will get a NEW monitor for that price. And yes, it works fine with the MXO…if you get it. That is what I used for a while.
Plus the component inputs and other inputs make it really worth it. And the power cord is a simple POWER CORD! Not that stupid ass Apple BRICK that just gets in the way. GOD I HATE THAT THING!

Ditto on the recommendation, go with a new Dell and you’ll save money. Oh if you go with an Apple monitor again, you’ll get a 3 year AppleCare plan right? 🙂

Walter – Quite right. I got the Apple Care on the MBPro. Already used it. Didn’t bother with they keyboard & monitor (purchased later). Never again. If it costs more than a couple hundred bucks, I’m in for the extended warranty.
Anybody have a good use for a 23″ boat anchor? Target practice? Really skinny aquarium? Ikea store prop?

the Apple 23″ cinema display (all models) are formally DISCONTINUED. They don’t make them anymore. The new LED 24″ monitors from Apple are for the Mac Book Pro ONLY, and there are NO 23″ or 24″ LED or LCD monitors from Apple anymore. If you don’t like it, go jump under a truck. The Dell 2408WFP is a wonderful monitor. I am sure that there will be new monitors from Apple soon, but today is not that day. Anyone that would spend over $500 to have an Apple Cinema display repaired should be shot. Do you think that Apple actually has a technician that fixes these monitors. Your monitor goes into the DUMPSTER, and they give you one out of their inventory that they are no longer selling.

Yeah, I knew the 23″ were discontinued. My local dealer still has them in stock, but I wasn’t interested in paying retail for an end-of-life product. And I know the new 24″ isn’t compatible with the dual DVI on my laptop. Plus I have zero interest in the shiny, reflective screens.
I also assumed that Apple would just send a new monitor rather than repair (hence the flat fee). My gut told me the whole operation was probably pointless. I just wanted some confirmation from you guys.
Certainly not an Apple “fanboi” when it comes to these things. I’ll certainly be checking out the Dell monitors, as editing on a 17″ laptop screen becomes tedious after a while.
And I’d rather rent or bite the bullet for a real picture evaluation monitor than spring for an MXO and a new computer monitor. How do like the 17″ or 24″ Panasonic broadcast LCD monitors? Isn’t the 17″ around 3 grand? Worth it? (I know they’re not CRTs, but I’ll never have THAT kind of money!)

Jeff I’ve seen several sony pvm 14L/5 and 20L/5 crt multi-format monitors for sale
here at the cow classifieds and on ebay in the last 6 months.be patient and just spring for one of those i say.
the 14″ can be usually had for 1,300 ish.
I got one last year and love it.

Hey Bob Zelin – are these any good? I know Sony has produced some stinkers in the past.
Makes me long for the days when monitors were simple. You were either a Barco man, an Ikegami man or a Sony man. Nobody bothered with JVC or Panasonic. And everybody just worried about the guy with his old Conracs…
