    Hey All –

I have a 1080i 23.98 project that was shot in HDCAM. I now have to output to a Panasonic 1200a DVCPRO HD deck for broadcast.

Final Cut’s firewire output (if I choose the DVCPROHD 1080i60) looks like dookie (that’s the technical term) with lots of motion problems (looks like bad reverse pull-down… which is what it is, I suppose). I’ve been reading the COW for the last coulple hours trying to wrap my head around what I can do at this point to meet my deadline, but I’m stuck.

I’m going to give http://www.nattress.com‘s “Standards Converter” a try, but I’m not sure if that is the correct or the best solution.

This is one of our first HD projects and I will never mix formats like this again if I can help it. I didn’t realize at the beginning of the project that the station only has DVCPROHD capabilities.

    Panasonic 1200a

I do have a Kona2, but I have the 1200a connected via firewire, not through the Kona2.

Thanks in advance for the help!

If you have a Kona 2, why don’t you use the Kona to add the pulldown to get you to 1080i? Connect the Hd-SDI out of the Kona to the HD-SDI in of the deck and away you go.

That still doesn’t look very good. That is definately my “fallback” position, but I’m hoping that I’m overlooking something that will give me a smoother conversion.

    Thanks for the response, Jeremy!

    What’s your pulldown set to?

Yikes… you got me on this one… there’s a FCP preference to set your pulldown? Time to RTFM, I guess.

Not FCP, it’s in the Kona Control Panel.

Make sure deck is set to record 1080i and not 720p. 720 is the default record setup for that deck. You need to go into the menus to set up for 1080i.

It should be a seamless, very smooth record from HDCAM to DVCPro HD as we’ve taken uncompressed HD and laid it out to DVCPro HD here in the past. The difference between the two is almost imperceptible. You want to do this via HD-SDI from your Kona 2 directly from your 1080i timeline, not via Firewire.

FYI, which network is accepting DVCPro HD tapes for broadcast? We shoot with the Varicam and do a complete DVCPro HD workflow for Post, but then need to deliver HDCAM for broadcast.

Ah! Yes. I’ll check to see this morning. Any hint to what the pulldown cadence SHOULD be set to? Right now, I’m sure it’s set to the default.

Thanks Walter… I’ll double check all my steps just to be sure I’m not missing something.

I did go through the menus on the deck and set it for 1080i. I was having some trouble getting the video to show on the deck from SDI, but now that I’ve had a good night’s sleep (well… “a night’s sleep”), maybe I’ll see where my problem was.

Basically, when going out SDI, I was getting garbage on the screen, which implies to me that I had a FCP or a 1200a setting wrong, but I wasn’t able to figure out which.

I’m heading into the office now. Will give an uptate in a bit.

Hit the codec tab in the control panel and set it to 2:3:2:3. This should give you a smooth pulldown.

Here’s the problem… Going SDI out, when I have my FCP Easy Setup set to KONA2 – 1080 23.98, I get garbage on the deck. When I set it to KONA2 – 1080 29.97, I get picture and audio, but it introduces the pulldown to the image.

Can’t I lay back at 24FPS since I’m styaing high def?
