I guess what I’m really confused about is why I have to introduce the pulldown at all. If I’m staying in high def, why do I need to go back to 29.97? I understand the need (and the sacrafice) if I’m laying back to SD, but not HD.

Check menu 030 on the deck and make its set correctly to your frame rate.

Also, are you watching this as it records, or playing back from the recorded tape? You can’t always trust the video playback during record. Record a sample piece and play that back.

Lastly, does the monitor connected to the deck support 24p playback?

I thought maybe you had it with the HD Frequency setting (I hadn’t looked at that), but it is set for 59/23.

I was watching the loop-through from the deck on the monitor, and it looked *different* than directly from FCP (on the same monitor), but I’ll definately check a recorded section.

Brent I have been lurking on this so let me get this straight
You have a 1080 24psf project you need to lay to a DVCPROHD tape.

I was not aware that any deck but the D5 can capture the HDCAM 1080 24psf as true 24p.( meaning that it only records the 24 actual frames)

I am not positive, but I believe that the 1080 on DVCPROHD tape is only supported as a 1080i60 video stream which is not the same as the 1080 24psf as shot by HDCam. (24psf plays back on most all displays and systems as 48i)

Note that the 1700 and D5 decks can Playback tapes as a true 1080p24 signal (progressive) rather than the regular
1080 24psf ( progressive segmented frame) that most systems use.

1080i runs at a frame rate of 29.97. That deck does not record at 1080 23.98 so you have to add a pulldown in order to get you up to 29.97.
