1080/24p and KONA 2
Posted by Keith Hill on August 21, 2005 at 10:16 pmI’m researching the two cards on the market for capturing and monitoring solutions for my edit station (FCP5). I currently edit in 24p (23.98) when editing footage captured using my DVX100A in Advanced mode. In the near future, my DVX100A will be modified to capture uncompressed 4:4:4 1080/24p (see: https://www.reel-stream.com/ for how this will accomplished – amazing!) . Though I will not need a capture card to digitize this footage to my harddrive, I still want to be able to monitor at the highest quality audio and video. As of now, I want to utilize a DVCProHD workflow and output to uncompressed HD-SDI for archive masters.
My question is: Is there such a thing as a 1080p DVCProHD codec? All I seem to see from KONA 2 and DecklinkPro HD info is 1080i related workflows.

August 21, 2005 at 11:53 pmI may be wrong on this but I do not believe that USB 2.0 cannot pass uncompressd 4:4:4, for that matter neither can FireWire 400/800.
Let us all know how the modification goes.
As far as 1080p goes, I have not seen it on a KONA. 1080i yes not 1080p.

August 22, 2005 at 1:19 amHi Fred,
The workflow with the DVX after being modified with the Andromeda system is something like working with Serious Magic’s DVRack. The Andromeda comes with a proprietary software called SculptorHD. The raw footage is processed with in the SculptorHD software on a Powerbook into any format which you can usually export to/from FCP. This means you can export the footage as uncompressed individual TIFF frames, or a DVCPROHD clip, or any other format you already work with. After that, you just load it into FCP or Combustion just like you would any other file. It’s an amazing development. Seeing is beleiving though. There’s test footage on their website as the Beta Test is concluding.About the 1080p codec question. I just read where Technicolor Creative Services had modified the DVCProHD codec to support 1080p/24p for a particular project that they were working on. You can read the article and give me your feedback when you can.

August 22, 2005 at 3:28 amAll of that info from that article sounds good and really expensive (sounds like they are somehow using a D5 deck for the transfers), but how are you going to get your hands on that modified codec?
What I am about to tell you is pure speculation and has no actual truth or hard evidence to support these claims
I imagine there’ll be a way coming up soon with the HVX200 camera from Panasonic as it supposedly shoots 1080p24 (although it’ll be 1080i with an advanced pulldown added much like the DVX100 shoots in NTSC w/advanced pulldown). SO if this new camera supports 1080p24 then they will probably release a codec that will allow you to digitize (or in your case import) to DVCProHD 1080p24. Or you can work at 720p24 and reconform when an actual 1080p24 codec exists.

August 22, 2005 at 3:43 amHey man, what’s up?
This is a sweet scenario you suggest. Seems to me that what you suggest is highly possible. I’ll keep watch on that. Otherwise, I may have to fake a job and get these Technicolor catz to let me use that codec:)Keith Hill

Not so fred,
the 1080 24psf is supported on the Kona, but remember that HDCam produces this via a progressive segmented frame -or the marriage of 2 fields back into one frame.
the 1080P format for 4:4:4 Dual link content is a true progressive frame but data at that size is over 200megs per second and could NOT be sent over a single USB2 connection. Dual Link HD requires 2 HDSDI feeds to support it.
Lastly – there is not spec for 1080 content for the real steam product. 1540 x990 is not any format in any compressions that is accepted by ATSC or SMPTE.

August 22, 2005 at 8:54 pmGary, you are the Guru, but the question was about 1080p.
1080P and 1080 PsF are not the same thing.
1080PsF is supported, and as you noted it is reconstructed by the marriage of 2 interlaced fields back into one progressive frame.
Common 1080p formats like 1080p/30, 1080p/29.97, 1080p/25, 1080p/24, 1080p/23.98
are not suported as of now, but 1080p/24, 1080p/23.98 might look like PsF to the KonaFred

Oh yeah, and don’t we know it. —
Explain that to some of the guys in HDCam world.

August 23, 2005 at 5:31 pmThought I would jump in.
The Kona cards have/do support both 24p and 24psf.
Here is the format info right off the AJA website.
HD Formats: 1080i 50.00/59.94/60.00, 720p 59.94/60.00, 1080p sf 23.98/24.00, 1080p 23.98/24.00/29.97/30.00We do have studios using both p and psf that’s why I was a bit confused when this came up.
The issue of psf vs p is for another day……
Hey Gary, drop me an email, I’m working on some Varicam info for our website and could use some input.
Cheers,

The is a mention of 1080p under Dual Link in the above pdf, and only a mention of 1080psf 23.98 and 1080psf 24 for Video Inputs.

Fred,
in the 1080i world there is only PSF. Sony did this” progressive segmented frame” to elongate the amount of time their interlaced technology would stay in the coming progressive world. PSF is treated by many as a “progressive format” ( mostly on the west coast
The only TRUELY progressive format in the Sony 1080 world is Dual Link.gary adcock
