  • Renders look worse than Pics at same size?

Posted by Andrew Harman on March 24, 2011 at 12:02 am

I have made the slideshow from stills. Made them all 1920×1080 pixels – so all images the same. it is made up of real photos and architectural renders. Again, all the same size.
Weird thing is, the renders, especially on the diagonal angles appear semi bitmapped where the photos, all look great.

    Why the difference?

    Thanks All

What are your time line settings?

    **Hindsight is always 1080p**

What Zane is alluding to, is that your timeline codec will compress your stills when rendered. Depending on the timeline settings, they could look better. Try switching the timeline to ProRes and see if it takes care of the artifacts (at all.)

Also, you should really evaluate the quality on a broadcast monitor, not your FCP preview screen (or Digital Cinema Desktop, unless it’s set to Raw)

The Renders are supplied as hi-res Tiffs. we have used this renders (they are effectively pictures as are photo real) in the glossy brochures.

I realised that i posted this in the FCP section. I am using a different program to generate the video file slideshow so there is not timeline to mention.

    Thanks All

Sometimes I find hi-rez files don’t do as well. Can you set the DPI of the stills down to 72 b/4 import and see how they look?

    What codec is your sequence?

Walter has psoted a tutorial here on the cow on working with stills, don’t know if it relates to your issue a whole lot but might be worth taking a look @ if you haven’t:

Which is your Sequence codec and your Render setting?
Set Prores and “Render in High Precision” and “Render Motion Effects: BEST”.
