Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy HDV to SD DVD

Please help with any tips or suggestions.

I am trying to get my HD project on the FCP timeline onto a SD DVD. I have followed the white paper article on KenStone.net here…
    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/hdv_timeline_to_sd_dvd.html

Ken Stone’s suggestion involves exporting the HD timeline to Apple Pro Res 422 using Quictime conversion. Then dropping the .mov file into Compressor to create seperate A/V files (m2v and ac3) Finally drop the A/V files into DVDSP and all should be well.

I tried it and the following error pops up…. “HVDVD_TS found in Build Location The Build location contains a HVDVD_TS folder (HD DVD content). You must remove the HVDVD_TS folder from the Build location in order to proceed with Build/Format of a Standard DVD project”

Then I posted on the KenStone forums where I received the suggestion to create a DVD that contains a Video_TS folder and not a HVDVD_TS folder.
    https://www.kenstone.net/discussions/read.php?3,4268,4268#msg-4268

I do not know how to go about exporting my HD project to ensure a Video_TS folder will result in the final to bring into DVDSP. I read some forum articles on Creative Cow where good results were had by dropping a HD timeline into a newly created SD timeline in FCP. I tried this most recently, when I tried to burn the project in DVDSP onto a DVD-r it gave the same HVDVD_TS error mentioned above.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks

The problem is that DVDSP is set to create an HD DVD. You need to manually change that setting to SD DVD. It’s there… You’ll have find it yourself as I’m not at my Mac now.

    Thanks for the prompt response.

I made certain to check in the preferences in DVDSP that under the “Project” settings “DVD Standard” was set to “SD DVD”.

Not only that but the error message I am getting from DVDSP specifically says I must get rid of the HVDVD_TS folder in a Standard DVD project.

When the error message says “Standard DVD project” I interpret that as DVDSP acknowledging I am currently working in a SD DVD project. The problem lies in this HVDVD_TS folder which came sometime during compression (I think). The solution is in how I can export my HD project in the timeline so that it creates the Video_TS folder I need to work the project in DVDSP.

I think the issue is in the method used to compress the file. I don’t know

Did you use one of the DVD presets in Compressor? If so, then that’s not your problem.

Try changing the destination where DVDSP is writing to the root of a drive with no directory or file name.

Start a new DVDSP project and make to set the project for an SD DVD beore importing any assets. Then proceed. You most likely had the initial project set to make an HD DVD then changed it, and that doesn’t work.

So i changed the destination. DVDSP is currently burning a copy.

It is great the error message is gone and that it allowed a burn. My fear now is the original problem which is that the DVD will not play in a standard DVD player. As the response I receieved in the KenStone post states the HVDVD_TS is used in HD DVD players and will not work in standard DVD players or Blu-Ray players.

If this burnt copy houses any of the HVDVD_TS folder chances are it wont play on anything but a Mac. That’s what I think.

It absolutely must have a TS_Video folder. That is the DVD spec.

    Mr. Weiss,

I am soo very grateful to you.

I doubted the advice you gave had direct relevance to the root of my issue, but after following what you said I now am looking at a working DVD. Thank you.

I set the destination in the preferences into a separate folder on an external drive. Then I went into build and format settings and changed the current project location to the same folder on the external HDD.

Somehow it all worked, I can’t explain it, but I thank you for helping me. I hope to some day reciprocate the assistance in some way.

I know you already have a solution to your problem but for anyone else who may come accross this post I have found another method. After being frustration about this problem I finally located the mysterious “HVDVD_TS” nemisis. It’s located in your library under the file Caches. Look for DVDstudio and once you open it there it will be, mocking you. I did what I had to do and took him down. I threw it in the trash and tried to burn the DVD again and it worked. I can only assume that if I place it back in the cache it will continue to do what it needs to do when I need it but until then it’s home will be in the bin. Hope this helps.

I had this problem too, thanks for helping me solving the issue. But, is there a way to keep that HD DVDTS file from coming back every time?

    thanks,
    Steve
