interlacing third and last try
[last try, now with special char. removed]
All,
I recently converted from AVID to Final Cut Studio and have benefited ENORMOUSLY from searching and reading the threads here (if only such a resource existed way back when I started learning AVID).
One recurring question Ive seen in a variety of guises has to do with interlacing problems. Or, perhaps I should say dealing with interlacing issues seems to be a recurring answer to many problems posted here. Interestingly, I never came across this issue when using AVID and I was mixing tons of different formats. Yet, Im constantly struggling with this in FCP.
Let me give one example. Due to the nature of my work (Im a teacher and make lots of clips for classroom illustrations) I do a lot of capturing from DVD. On my system we have a tascam DV-DO1U DVD player going component out into an AJA Kona breakout box. Theres no problem capturing (Im capturing 10 bit uncompressed, lower field dominance with same sequence settings) and playback on both my Apple cinema display and my Panasonic BTLH1700w HD monitor look great (well, great for having captured a compressed signal over component). When, however, I export to quicktime (or anything, for that matter), the image becomes very feathered. If I deinterlace before exporting, then it looks fine.
Two questions and a plea:
1) Ive done a lot of experimenting with different field dominance settings (lower, upper, none, etc.) and I get the same interlacing problem on export. Are there suggestions for other things to try?
2) While Im happy to de-interlace the image, it just seems in my gut that Im killing the quality of an already low-quality capture. True? Does a progressive scan DVD player (or not) influence this problem? The plea: it would be great to have some of the gurus here put together a primer or tutorial on field dominance issues. At the very least, it might help reduce questions by providing a resource to point others to. And, an advance apologetic plea, if such a primer already exists (I searched but couldn
