New QT update today – of interest is timecode support!

QuickTime 7.1.6 addresses numerous bug fixes and includes support for Final Cut Studio 2, and timecode and closed captioning support in QuickTime Player. Apple recommends the update for all QuickTime 7 users. It is available for download from Apple

[Chi-Ho Lee] “Does that mean you can finally see timecode in a QT player now?”

Yep, that’s exactly what it does. I just let my laptop update and there’s now an option to view Timecode or Frame number along with the standard time. Very cool.

I’m having no problem with it running in my production machine,
    FCP 5.1.4 OS 10.4.9.

I just did the update too and it works fine.
The timecode viewing, I know some people won’t care too much about it,
but for having to send out DVDs (used to be VHS) with window burns
for transcripts or a quicktime for music composers, this is great. I hope Apple
released it for Windows too because that’s what our transcription people use
and also most of our clients.

[Chi-Ho Lee] “Implemented exactly the way I thought it would.”

That’s because Steve Jobs invented timecode, just as Al Gore invented the Internet.

Nah, Steve Jobs didn’t really do much for timecode, but Al Gore did an awful lot for the internet.

Walter, thank you for the information. Did you notice the “Show timecode when available” option on the General tab in QuickTime Player Preferences? This check box seems to select the timecode display as the default (instead of Standard).

This is all well and good if you play back your QT export that you made directly from FCP, but if you take this export to Compressor or Sorenson to compress it, then that information is gone. Quite useless for those of us who send out this stuff out for Client review.

In the Movie Properties Menu (CMD+J) you can select the timecode track and it will display TC in a small text on a white strip at the top of the window. This could then be Saved As or Exported directly or for Compressor. However if you scale the movie the TC text will be unreadable.
