Playback of 1080i 29.97 lags
AJA Kona 3…MacPro Quad 3.0Ghz… FSI 2460 monitor. FCP 7.0.3… MacOS 10.5.8.
I can play back 23.98 psf footage all day long…no problem. But if I get ANY 29.97 footage…1080p 29.97, 1080i 29.97…playback lags.
One project is 1080p 29.97…ProRes 422. If I choose 1080i 29.97 10-bit playback, the lag happens almost instantly on the external monitor. After two seconds, I am way off. The FSI image plays back slow…almost half speed. The AJA CP says the frame buffer is 1080i 29.97. If I switch to 8-bit 1080i 29.97, I remain in sync for longer, but after 5 seconds, it is gone again.
Another project, 1080i 29.97…interlaced. Same issue…10 bit goes out of sync instantly…8 bit takes longer. BUT, I also get weird cadence on the monitor…think it has something to do with the interlacing.
I trashed preferences, and uninstalled the drivers and installed the latest 8.1 drivers… and the issue remains. This machine cannot play back 1080i 29..97 footage without lag. There is another edit station here, that has the exact same specs…but it can play the footage fine…no lag.
Please tell me I am missing one small simple thing.

Hey Shane,
After this post, I’ll be stepping aside as I’m sure our friend Jeremy G. will find interest in figuring out what’s going on here. Also, I swear there was a thread either here or in FCP with someone having the EXACT same problem in the past year or so.
I was having a completely separate issue with one of our KONA 3’s recently and it was advised that I re-seat the card in a different slot. That was not the solution to my problem, but I do seem to recall something about a slot configuration in regard to this problem. I’m not sure if that is a solution, but I know that different vintages of MacPro’s want the KONA 3 in a specific slot. I found our year old MacPro could run the KONA 3 in either slot 2 or 3 with no problems. So, I don’t know if changing slots would be a good idea or possible solution for your problem?

Good idea! I’ll try reseating the card. If that doesn’t work, switching slots. Currently in Slot 3.

Click on the Apple symbol, then MORE INFORMATION.
On the screen, you will see on the second line- MODEL IDENTIFER.If it’s a 1,1 machine (and not a 2,1 3,1 4,1 or 5,1) you have an original Mac Pro that used the Expansion Slot Utility. If Slot 3 is a x1 lane, you will have this problem.
This is how to open up the expansion slot utility, and change the number of lanes for slot 3 (and the other slots) –

Issue resolved. I cannot play audio out through the KONA…I have to use BUILT IN AUDIO and the output on the back of the Mac into the mixer. When I bypass the Kona, it works fine, stays in sync. If I switch and use the KONA for playback…sync goes out of whack. And I still have to use 8-bit for Viewing. 10-bit throws it off sync after two seconds.
Yes, it is a band aid. But this machine doesn’t do tape outputs, only tape captures. And 29.97 is a rarity here….23.98 is the norm. And it works.

that makes no sense. The Audio out of the MAC is NOT in sync with the Kona. the only thing that is ever in sync is the Kona audio outputs – not the MAC audio output.

Yeah…if I enable audio through the Kona, sync in a 29.97 sequence starts to drift. Don’t select it, and it’s fine.
This is a 4 year old Kona 3, in a bay at a major network, so getting any sort of permission to call and do tech support and possibly RMA this thing would be a pain. But this workaround works for now. When things get REALLY bad…I might call in. But most of the time we do 23.98, which is rock solid. And all tapeless delivery.

This could also be a card firmware/driver issue. If you have the keys, I’d reload the firmware and update the Kona drivers on that system. Couldn’t hurt…

Firmware reloaded and latest drivers installed…I had that much leeway. No change.
