    Hi Michael

thanks for your advice. I have just linked via AMA as suggested but the footage stutters a lot, i don’t think the equipment I have been given for this project can handle this workflow. The frame rate however appears to all be 25fps, which i didn’t not expect.

    4GHz
    16GB memory 1600 MHz DDR3

I am fully aware of the grading process, however on this project they don’t have budget for a grading suite, much to my dismay, the DoP/Director is a very experienced and said he had shot it in such a way that it would require a small amount of ‘tweaking’ in the avid – fingers crossed. So I was hoping to start with aB&W LUT in avid and then take it from there. Your article is very interesting – thanks

I don’t really want to grade the rushes in REDCINE X PRO prior to editing in avid, just incase they want to see colour options in the avid etc. From experience Directors can be very set on an idea and then can change their mind rapidly, so i want maximum flexibility in the avid.

Do you suggest that I transcode everything in REDCINE X PRO to MXF 175, then edit in the avid, then apply Luts and ‘grade’ as best I can in the avid, then export as same as source etc. Or would you suggest another route?

The 25fps has thrown me a bit. I suppose i just create a 1080/25p project?

    Thanks
    Zoe

    Hi Ben

i personally always use Gtech, they are much more durable and i have never experienced any problems. with Lacie drives i have had lots of problems over the years, ports stop working, they become sluggish, they often needle-building.

that said i’ve never used the lace raid you mention. but i would always go of Gtech

    sorry, just to add

would it be better to export as MXF 175 files with audio? then do everything in avid then export as same as source?

    thanks everyone

    Fantastic thanks Michael.

I was also thinking, if we were going to grade elsewhere then another option could be to Transcode in RedCine X Pro to apple Pro Res. Then AMA link the files. If we do decide to output at 4K then I could export an XML, conform back in RedCine X Pro, then output the desired format – ready to be graded in another software. Would that work? sounds nice and simple. I’ve been informed that everything was shot at 24fps.

    many thanks

    Hi Michael

thanks for the reply. I believe the avid i will be using is MC7, would it be possible to AMA link the Red files okay in this version? if so what resolution would you recommend?

you mentions “But you may choose to bake in whatever settings you have from camera, or adjusted via the RMD file” we may choose this option – if we did, how is this actually done? sorry i’ve only ever worked offline before with a DIT transcoding everything, i’ve never been a one man band before

    Thanks

Thanks Shane and Eric for getting back so quickly.

We’ve decided to keep the project 1080p, as the final output will mainly be for internet use. So a file output. I’m not sure about the amount of footage but I’ve been told ‘its not much – 2 day shoot’.

Do you think AMA link and transcode would work best or would i be better of going through Davinci Resolve? Ideally we would like to do any basic grading inside of Avid. Failing that i was thinking of exporting and using Adobe Suit.

If i did go via AMA link and transcode to 175 – would that be the best resolution i could work at?

    Many thanks

    Hi everyone

does anyone know how to install apple pro res codec on MC7 – i need to do a QT export and sending via Same as source will take 3 hours, then i would have to process via MPEG Streamclip or if i export as a QT reference it is also saying around 3hrs. If anyone knows how to install apple pro res codec, please let me know, as on previous machines I’ve found that to be just as quick

    thank you

    hi everyone

I’ve installed everything that came with avid – i’ve updated codecs from the QT website and fine in to the terminal as suggested but I still dont have access to anymore. I have one machine with loads and one with very limited codecs

I’ll try exporting same as source and crunching in Squeeze

    thanks for all your suggestions.

great thank you. Because of the burn ins and titles we use over the picture, exporting as a QT reference seems to take a long time, as long as exporting using a QT codec. exporting a 2hr film, same as source creates a huge file, which is sometime a pain because of our drive space.

I normally use compressor or Mpeg stream clip but i’ll take a look at Squeeze

    thanks

  • Good idea, thanks 🙂
