  • Hi, what format is your file? If it’s an MP4, it’s nothing you are doing wrong. I have been spending countless hours trying to resolve this dilemma myself. This much I can tell you. You need to convert your files. Download MPEG Stream Clip. You can open your MP4 with it – the do a save as. You will see this screen come up. If you do the following settings you can get it into an MOV file that will import into FCP and won’t need rendering on your time line. So far, only this setting has worked for me: compression – Apple DV – PAL , put your quality at 100% check box the Interlaced Scaling. When you import that file into FCP, you will see if gives you a terrible looking file, however the flie is workable within the timeline. I have not yet tried out all the settings – I am going to do this down the entire list – So i can fully dislcose which settings work, which don’t and which are optimal. FCP is NOT really intuitive – it is nice as far as your effect options and you can get good cuts on it, however, you might even want to consider trying Avid, I’m told it’s not as difficult as FCP – there are LOTS of comapatibility issues and that continues once you are trying to get a quality export with your finished product. I’m giving myself one more week to try to reslove this, if not, I am moving onto something better and less time consuming.

  • MPEG Streamclip does not allow you to specify as to specfic formats of MOV files. It simply creates a file as a MOV file. Perhaps there is some specific default MOV file that it produces, but when it exports into QT to produce a MOV file, there is no information upon format or anything like that that I can see. Also, unfortunately, the ONLY way I have found to produce MP4 conversions to MOV files is by doing the double step. MPEG Streamclip does not offer prores in the format options – the only format options are: DV, AVI, QT, and MPEG-4, and several listed under other not including prores. Believe me, if there was a way to do this simply as a one step process without losing quality, I would do that. But as many people have not found a way, I wanted to at least share that there is in fact a way to get it to work, while not optimal, certainly possible.

OOOHHHHH I get it!!!! I did remember that! I just watched a tutorial on how to set that. OK, I think I understand what is happening. The scratch is set to the Hard Drive on the lap top, which has limited space, so as files are being created in FCP, and they are big files with all the rendering and what not, they are taking up ALL that very little space that I have on the lap top HD. SOOO, if I set the scratch for the External HD which has PLENTY of space ALL those files I am importing and working with in FCP should be stored on the external and so that would resolve my space issue with the project. That’s either right, or sounds totally crazy and at this point, I don’t know what the hell it is.

  • As far as the info on the MP4 clip, it’s 10.5MB and codec H.264….there’s lot’s of other information, what specifically should I be looking for?

Ok So, if I set at the scratch disk, does that mean that I have to also reinstall the actual software onto the external drive? I am somewhat familiar with that term, but I’m not sure how I go about setting that.

I know this message, I have gotten this before. I was not able to open up my project at all. However, I was not that far into my project when I started having that problem. So, I made copies of the project as I worked – pretty much every time I did an edit sequence, I made a copy. This was NOT the optimal way to work, however, I was able to open a prior saved copy and work from there. I had to delete the project I was working on, as it was not possible to do anything with it. I hope you found a better way/or resolution to this. Were you able to re-open, recover???

  • AH HA! Yes I do have this and I have used this before though only to export a final project. Now, how exactly does it work to convert these MP4 files????

  • Ok, so Compressor is a seperate component that comes with FC7? I do not have the disks for this software. I’m going to have to check and see if it’s located somewhere on this machine. I have never used it, so probably not.

  • I am working on FCP 7.0.3. Ok will try that! I hope you are right!! Thanks so much!

  • Hi Joe,

Thanks for responding. The flip Ultra HD produces MP4 formats. I have heard of MPEG Streamclip and I’m gonna try that. I don’t know what Compressor is, is that something on the acutal application or a converter to purchase/download? I just know that when you convert things is messes with quality and I did do this once without doing so and could work with MP4s on the timeline unrendered, but I had to constantly save back up copies as I would get strange error messages and the program would lock me out and I’d lose the entire edit. I can’t remember what the hell was changed, but I’m told it’s not advisable from everything I can gather to work with MP4s on the timeline anyway. I’m going to see if I can get this Streamclip to work..
